The Wisdom We Need to Design Humane Technology

“The fundamental problem of humanity is that we have palaeolithic emotions, medieval institutions, and God-like technology.” — E. O. Wilson.

More than ever, we need the wisdom to match the power of our God-like technology. Yet, technology is both eroding our ability to make sense of the world, and increasing the complexity of the issues we face. The gap between our sense-making ability and issue complexity is what we call the “wisdom gap.”

How do we develop the wisdom we need to responsibly steward our God-like technology?

We need the Wisdom Elders as the centre of all our biggest societal directions… not only intellectuals. They have their part yet the source coming from those who are recognized and respected as Wise Elders have a depth of Soul and gravitas that guides beyond the mind🙏🏽

At least I won’t be labeled crazy when I stand on a soapbox, holding a sign that reads “the end is near!”

What can I do to help Tristan? For a long time, I've been interested in the work of the Center for Humane Technology and The Consilience Project. I've brought up the wisdom-complexity-gap many times during conversations with people I know when it was appropriate and noticed two key friction points: (Point 1) The issue is so complex and far beyond their comprehension of 'reality'. In other words, their sense-making capacity is simply inadequate to understand the issue without investing reasonable time and effort out of their own volition when there is no short-term benefit/gain (e.g. money) or consequence (e.g., bad grade). Unfortunately, the majority of (Point 2) people are aware of social media's potential harms (e.g., mental health), but most simply don't care beyond the media's framing of a "declining mental health in teenagers." Most people are concerned with what they are doing/working on right now, such as a job, education, hobby, and raising their children, rather than the (second and third order) consequences of their actions. Our culture appears to be in a race to the bottom, and not enough people seem to care or understand to alter its course. The whole situation is analogous to the saying – fish don't know they're in the water.

It's unfortunate that the list of issues on the left is incomplete.... Inequity, concentration of wealth/power, mass migration, among others could be added. It would be interesting to know how to help...

I meant to add something i heard thAt seems wise. We put so much energy into the potential of genz while disdaining Elders. Data shows youth addicted to scrolling much more succebtible to being hacked while elders/boers who spend less time do better not to mention the discernment age confers. I keep my phone turned off. Only known contacts ring thru. I imagine you are aware of this.

Thanks for a shorter version. Men and their drive for power are killing us. I'm happy to live simply and include meditation thtoughout my day. I'm on an app that has at least half a million at any time. We have wisdom classes and live events available. Still the same model but with a different intention. I choose hroups by the quality of engagement based on the greater good. Learn to meditate for peace and please stop this deadly race.

“The fundamental problem of humanity is that we have paleolithic emotions, medieval institutions, and God-like technology.” — E. O. Wilson, This makes me recall the words said by Mr. Jacque Fresco, "There is no this and that problems, there is only human problem." This is true, If we can unite together, share all the resources, and get rid of the prejudices between different races, and nations, there will be eventually no problem.
