I had an Excel spreadsheet that did analysis of thousands upon thousands of data circuit prices from multiple vendors globally to determine if a company was paying too much for their data circuits given location, size of the pipe, type of circuit, etc. Took 30 minutes to calculate when I would input data from a specific company to analyze their data circuit costs vs. performance.

Blame the state of design on Adobe, when they bought industry leader Macro Media and immediately killed 'Fireworks' & 'Dreamweaver,' leaving only Photoshop which sucks in comparison to the former tools.

It's crazy what people are able to accomplish with Excel. In a previous job, my company acquired another that used Excel spreadsheets to conduct their business. For every new sale, they would clone the workbook and fill out the highly custom book. It would take info, store images, generate XML documents, query databases, send web requests, it did it all... Fortunately I didn't have to maintain it (we opted to just migrate the forms to our own apps) but I was the only one who could decipher it.

Fun fact: everything Microsoft does is probably due to a DOD requirement. Turns out that "Office 365" doesn't work well on closed-off-from-the-internet systems like the DOD's SIPRnet. Which is why they have access to Office builds that don't require the internet to activate or function.
And since Microsoft already built it for DOD why not just sell it to the masses at a good markup for increased profits?
