Ezra Koenig, lead singer of Vampire Weekend, sits down with Zane Lowe to discuss Vampire Weekend's first album in 5 years, 'Only God Was Above Us'.

They dive into the inspiration for the cover art of the album, a photo by Steve Siegel, and how often the imagery helped shape the music. Ezra talks about how the band’s natural “revolving door” effect where collaboration is welcomed if it makes sense for the music. Ezra also talks about the pressure to release music consistently that he felt earlier in his career, but how that has given way to being more comfortable with taking his time, since the gap between albums stops mattering as soon as a new album is released. Approaching his 40th birthday, Ezra shares his perspective on aging and plans to mark the day with a special performance.

Naw, naw, naw—for what is most likely going to be their best album to date, Vampire Weekend's Ezra Koenig deserved an outdoor walking-and-talking interview with Zane Lowe.

I have all of Vampire Weekend’s albums on vinyl. Excited for tomorrow! This album is going to be so good. I discovered them on SNL promoting their third album and was hooked. I always heard their name and thought they were a metal band so never listened lol. Now they’re one of my favorites. Wish it wasn’t so long between albums but they’re always worth the wait.

almost an hour, but it still felt short! I haven’t listened to VW much after FOTB tour, but now we’re back - new phase!

I've known of Zane Lowe for 25 years and it always seems like he's read every single piece of musical history and can say it and gives meaningful in depth responses, but I just cant get by the fact that it's all act

That statement at the end about what to hope for reminds me of that Bukowski poem talking about how you just want to be walking through the fire, not avoid it

Did Zane think about Quincy Jones being Ezra's father-in-law when he asked him about We are the World? LOL. Just seems like that should have come up, would have been interesting to not let Ezra gloss over that or ask him to pull in any advice or insight he's gotten from Quincy since knowing him? Great talk though!
