This song struck a chord nationally here. She wrote because her and her brother lost both of their parents during their teenage years. The music itself is kept very simple (on purpose here) but her lyrics are magical, are filled with these small details with words that sound similar but mean something different. At this point in time she wasn't a pro at all but was just dabbling in songwriting. This was a talent show that focused entirely on artists who write their own material. It actually launched several artists' careers including Maaike's. Since then she has already released two full albums and is now working on album nr. 3. You said you couldn't believe why she could sing that with such a straight face and actually that is one of remarks one of the judges on the couch actually makes, that the power of the song and its delivery is not that you see the emotion in her but that the emotion lands with the one listening / watching.

Never heard someone outside our small country do a reaction to this song, which I find quite unique; thanks very much for this choice! Warm regards from the Netherlands!

For a Dutch native, this is so beautiful. It is a hard language to make sound soft and watery. But she made the text cut like a knife, while she is loving and soft.

That was the most beautiful use of the Dutch language I have ever heard in my 58 years of being Dutch.

The judges burst out crying when she ended and one of them said "the balls that you have singing this, looking me dead in the eyes and smiling the whole time, it's incredible"

Note to every non-dutch speaker. the lyrics are perfectly translated, you may not get the rhyme, but the meaning is translated very well...

She also played this song live at the funeral of Dutch Prince Friso, who died in 2013 of a ski accident. It amazes me that she has such a strong control over her emotions, I could not perform live at a funeral

You should also see the reaction from the Dutch professionals that were watching her, 2 out of 3 broke down in tears. It’s a very very emotional and powerful song, and I think the translation doesn’t completely do it justice, the way she subtly plays with the dutch grammar and words is amazing, this girl has a true talent.

It’s beautiful that even if a song isn't in your language, it can still make you so emotional.

The fact that she sings it with a straight face, even smiling, makes it even more powerful.

We played this song at my dad's funeral a couple of years ago. I can't listen to it anymore without bawling, it's the worst kind of surprise when they play this on the radio even though it is a beautiful song.

I am actually happy to see it touches you too. I thought it was just the Dutch it would touch, but apparently it translates both in tone and in text. I still cry when listening to this song. Every time. It's healing tears though, and I don't think she truly realizes how much she touches everyone.

Many people find Dutch a harsh sounding language, but in song it sounds smooth and soft. Thanks for reminding me of this beautiful song. I'm in tears. It's beautiful to feel the feels. Lots of love from The Netherlands xxx

I love how this songs manages to move you even without you you understanding the lyrics. Imagine the subtitles you just read and imagine them like a poem on music. She uses the Dutch language incredibly beautifully in this song. I can never keep a dry eye hearing this one.

Mind you, she performed this song after one of the younger royals passed away. She performed during the funeral service in front of the royal family
