There's no mistaking a Dyson vacuum when you see it. Whether you're using an upright ball vacuum, a handheld Cyclone, or a motorhead vacuum, there's something distinctive about their design. And even refurbished, many find them the best on the market.

But the sleek and transparent vacuum we have today is a far cry from the cardboard and duct tape prototype built by a man who had been such a terrible student that his headmaster wondered what he’d do with his life.

It took more than 5,000 prototypes and near-constant financial debts and the threat of bankruptcy for Dyson to go from a company on the brink, to "outselling its competitors 3 to 1", and bringing in billions of dollars every year.

This is the story of Dyson.

A similar story: a college business class student named Smith writes a paper about a business idea. The professor says it would never work. Now we call it FedEx.

Fun fact: Dyson is the largest sole trader this means he's the only one that owns the business and he can go into infinite debt if something goes wrong

"Shut up. Just go and make it. See if it works." Basic but powerful.

Dyson's wife was the savior of the story, without her, the company wouldn't exist and the owner would've already gave up

Massive respect for James, 2000+ Prototypes and he did not give up after so many rejections, simply amazing.

People. You need to find a spouse like James's wife, who will support you in the hardest times rather than discourages your goal.

Telling a child that they are a failure is such nonsense. That child has many years ahead of them to learn and improve. To find something they like to do. The person telling this kid he is failure is most likely over 40. Is not willing to learn new things and his ego is higher than a Boeing 737 while flying. It's crazy how people stop to have an open mind.

Teachers should never call their students "failures" in the first place, because it will reflect on them.

His idea of having a bagless design is almost comparable to how some aquarium filters brands which use certain inserts that have to be replaced, like vacuums that use bags, versus sponge filters that can be cleaned and reused.

It is really interesting to learn the backstory of a successful person.

"You can't make billions with duct tape and cardboard, James. You're a failure." Objective updated: Make billions from duct tape and cardboard.

Respect to the headmaster for not labelling James as a no-talent or useless…

So sad that powerful people were part of his struggles. Now that he is powerful I hope he treats inventors better than he was treated.

I have massive respect for James Dyson I remember our first dyson vacuum cleaner, it came with a little booklet about him and his journey to success that I found incredibly inspirational as a kid.
