About the last part: yes. Although it is still being researched, seasonal depression seems to be attributed to the lack of daylight as well as vitamin D. Because of that, people living in countries with shorter days in the winter (e.g. Northern countries during winter in the Nothern hemisphere) are more likely to be affected by worsened depressive symptoms or seasonal affective disorder.
