While on Italy, some years ago, a guy from the university invited me to a soccer match. I politely declined, saying that I do not play soccer. He was flabbergasted, saying that this is something unheard of, a Brazilian unable to play soccer. I told him this was only a stereotype, but he insisted. Santos Dumont made the first public flight in 1906, the fact was FILMED!!!! He flies with one of the most important cities in Europe as a witness, then two guys come out of nowhere in 1908 and "prove" it with a photo that was supposedly taken in 1903 and with some witnesses. Even if they did it before, they didn't even invent a plane, they invented a glider and a very big slingshot.

About Santos Dumont, something similar was done to you italians; Meucci pretty much invented the phone, but the phone is credited to Bell because of a "successful patent". Dumont had the first officially observed flight in the middle of Paris with hundreds of witnesses, the Wright brothers came later with a document saying that a couple of years earlier, an american agent observed their flight in Kitty Hawk

Acho que também foi Santos Dumont que "inventou" o relógio de pulso. Até então se tinha relógio de parede ou aqueles com cordão que se guardava no bolso, ele que colocou em uma pulseira. "Dumont" é uma marca muito relevante aqui....

The Wright Brothers invented a plane that could not take off on its own. Santos Dumont made the first airplane that was capable of taking off and landing on its own. It is rare that a single inventor comes up with the whole idea, the Wright Brothers themselves were improving on older designs themselves since the wing effect was known since 320 AD used to make those tiny bamboo copter toys that you spin. So technically it was a series of incremental improvements over time made by many people.
But still, Santos Dumont was the first one to fly with autonomous takeoff and landing in Paris with his weird but functional 14-bis.
