The worst thing any southerner could have possibly done at the end of the Civil War was probably kill Lincoln. Andrew Johnsons handling of reconstruction was so awful.

The actor who played Grant didn’t have much airtime but stole every scene he was in. Best supporting actor in my book.

Lee’s defeated face after Grant and his officers remove their hats is haunting and well-done.

When Lee came to surrender at Appomatox Court House, one of Grant's first questions was as to the state of Lee's men. When informed that the food was gone, captured in a rearguard action during the retreat from Richmond and that Lee's men were starving, he sent an aide with orders to immediately distribute rations to the Confederate soldiers. That set the surrender on extremely amicable terms for the remainder of the meeting.

This would be the last time General Grant sees President Lincoln alive. General Grant was to be Lincoln’s guest of honor at Ford’s Theater the night Lincoln is shot; instead, Grant opted to go with his wife to visit his in-laws. In fact, the conspirators named Grant as one of the targets for assassination, and would’ve done so had he been there. The other targets being Secretary of State William Seward, who was attacked and barely survived, and Vice President Andrew Johnson, whose would-be assassin backed out at the last moment. Upon hearing the news that Lincoln had been shot that night, Grant was reported to have sobbed uncontrollably, even more so than he famously did during the Wilderness campaign. Not only did he lose a friend, which is what Lincoln had become by this point, but imagine the guilt he might’ve felt that he was supposed to be there, as well, and wasn’t.

DDL could have played the part as theatrical and larger than life but instead he gave us a Appalachian soft spoken country boy who has read a ton of books that truly earned his position

I think it's funny people complained about his accent. My grandfather was born in KY and lived in IL for much of his life and his accent was exactly the same. Hearing Lewis the first time was scary and made me a little sad how much he sounded like my grandpa.

If I didn’t know who these legends were, I truly would never believe they were British and not Americans, unbelievably talented and the accents are nearly perfection. Amazing movie

I almost broke into tears when he held Grant's face so tenderly and uttered those four words: "At a medium pace."

Ulysses S. Grant: “we've won the war now you have to lead us out of it” That's one of the saddest sentences I could ever hear in this movie. Lincoln never got to lead the nation out from that bloody war R.I.P Abraham Lincoln one of many great presidents of the United States

My great great grandfather was an artillery officer at Antietam where he was injured. He then was assigned to the staff of Salmon Chase, Secretary of the Treasury. When Lincoln appointed Chase to the Supreme Court in late 1864, my great great grandfather was assigned to Grant's staff and was at Appomattox along with Robert Lincoln. My great great grandfather kept a diary and in it stated he wouldn't have been so magnanimous most of all towards Lee who at West Point swore a solemn oath to defend flag and country.

The actor that played General Lee here is amazing! The gravity he brings expertly backing his horse out while never taking his eyes off of Grant is potent.

The fact that the man playing Lincoln is the butcher from Gangs Of New York goes to show you how damn good of an actor he is.

I think Daniel Day-Lewis did an excellent job as Abraham Lincoln.
