Serotonin doesn’t cross the blood brain barrier. So eating foods that contain serotonin doesn’t help increase central nervous system serotonin levels. I’m not sure how this was suggested by a health professional. Eating bananas for the vitamin B6 they contain and is an ingredient in the process of making serotonin would make sense, but if someone has low serotonin to other factors, eating bananas or walnuts aren’t going to help. You need to eat foods that contain tryptophan (does cross the blood brain barrier)

Not a mansion full of those would help me, only the meds work. This could only help those who do not have clinical depression/bipolar disorder, but just want to feel a bit "happier", which means they are not ill. For them it would work. But i.e. SSRIs take weeks to take effct even though the levels of serotonin are immediately increased; they do more then just increase the time serotonin stays in a sinapse, they do some job on receptors, as well etc. scientists don't know exactly, but it works.

Doing good deeds out in the community gives you a serotonin rise aswell.
