ethel cain perfectly captured the idea of being attached to a person who has no concerns for you, yet you stay with them anyways because you're scared of what would happen to them without you, so you start carrying their burden almost like you're doing it on their behalf. The lines "Trouble's always gonna find you, baby, but so will I" and "I'm never gonna leave you, baby, even if you lose what's left of your mind" just fills me up with melancholy instantly.
And the most heartbreaking part? The fact that it ends with "And know that, one day, you and I could be okay" 3

since nobody's posted the full lyrics, i'll do the honors:
He's never looked more beautiful
On his Harley in the parking lot
Breaking in to the ATMs
Sleeping naked when it gets too hot
I watched him show his love through shades of black and blue
Starting fights at the bar across the street like you do
The neighbors beat on the walls while I'm facefirst in the bed
Show me how much I mean to you while I'm lying in these sheets undressed
I'd hold the gun if you asked me to
But if you love me like you say you do
Would you ask me to?
Trouble's always gonna find you, baby
But so will I
Crying only because I'm happy
Hold me across every state line
I'm never gonna leave you, baby
Even if you lose what's left of your mind
'Cause you know I'll be right there beside you
Riding through all these western nights
Oh-oh, no-oh, no-oh, no-oh-oh
No-oh-oh, no-oh, no, no, no, no (oh)
I haven't spoken to my daddy in a long, long time
I don't want him to worry, always wondering if I'm alright
But the neighborhood keeps getting smaller (keeps getting smaller)
All starved out when the money's paper thin
All that's left are your walls and you'll die there
I should have known that there's no getting in, oh-oh
Trouble's always gonna find you, baby
But so will I
Crying only because I'm happy
Hold me across every state line
I'm never gonna leave you, baby
Even if you lose what's left of your mind
'Cause you know I'll still be right behind you
Riding through all these western nights
Through these western nights
Crying in the light of the TV static
I'll still be alright
Clinging onto you like some love blind addict
I'll be screaming your name
Past the gas stations, trailing down the interstate
Please, don't love how I need you
And know that, one day, you and I could be okay

1:11 I love how the drums start the same time she says āThe neighbors beat on the wallsā. It makes it feel so real.

This has been my album of the summer. It's literally changed me as a person.
This is probably my 25th full listen through...but only the second time I've watched it on youtube, the visualizers and videos and everything. That was actually how I took in this album the 1st time I heard it. Everything since then has been Spotify. But man...tonight....listening to this album, along with the visual aesthetic of it all, I'm falling in love all over again. THIS is why I love music. I'm picky af....I either think something is so emotionally and artistically and creatively groundbreaking AND catchy and weird and cool.....or it's just "other music." Other music can be amazing. Some of my favorite songs and artists are in that group. But the stuff I really care about....is still like this. Gah....I need to just shut up and go back to listening. It's hard not to gush....surprisingly hard. :/

the ending of this song is so deeply sad and for me the highest moment of the whole album :
Through these western nights
Crying in the light of the tv static
Iāll still be alright
Clinging onto you like some love blind addict
Iāll be screaming your name
Past the gas stations, trailing down the interstate
Please donāt love how i need you
And know that one day, you and i could be ok

If you say this artist doesn't need comparisons to anyone I would agree but after hearing how much she's mentioned in the same breath as Lana Del Rey I am truly drawn to the songs like this that bring me back to the dark, somber and ethereal music of peak Sarah McLachlans music. Ethel is a beautiful and unique hybrid of an artist that brings me back to things that are much needed in music and only then do you realize how sparse they are in todays music. <3

"trouble's always gonna find you baby, but so am I" really does live in my head rent free. This song deserves more love.
