We know that comedy comes out of pain. It’s no wonder so many comedians do jokes about their families. And it’s all relatable.

I worked with a hilariously blunt Chinese lady. One day I'd gone a bit too heavy with the black eyeliner. She just stared at me & said: "What happened to your eyes?? You look like pirate!" 😂

I was once stopped in a checkpoint with my Japanese grandma in the backseat. With the back window open she said to the officer: "I dare you can catch a robber with your big belly". He laughed and dismissed us.

For several years I worked in a music store owned by an older Asian woman. She was BRUTAL with her bluntness and honesty with the staff…and I loved it. It was hilarious. She never meant any of it to be cruel, she just thought it was the best way to communicate and she knew what and how she wanted things done. Our turn over rate with employees was so high though because they were mostly young white music nerds who didn’t know how to take it. During cold/flu season right before the holidays she would buy everyone a giant Costco pack of vitamin C drink mix and demand we drink it every day so we didn’t get sick during the busy season. She would personally ask us all every day if we had drunk it. If we said no she would make us one right there and watch us drink it. To her credit, I didn’t get sick. 😂

Many years ago our neighbors across the street brought their elderly parents from China to visit. They were very quiet and walked together daily. They wore simple dark colored clothing, much like a uniform. If I saw them I would wave and say hello. They politely nodded. One day I started work on a garden project to create a circle of plantings around our front tree. I was swinging my pick and making headway when I noticed the elderly gentleman watching me through his front window, then his front porch, then he was walking towards me. He nodded and took the pick out of my hands and proceeded to swing away! Try as I may, he would not give me back my tool! He was happy and smiling and having a great time. I just watched. He dug out my entire circular bed, through massive tree roots, in record time. The look of exhilaration on his face as he handed me back the pick was priceless! Before going back across the street he taught me to say hello. After that, we both waved and always exchanged hearty ni hao’s!

"Asian parents, they're way too honest, so every pep talk just sounds like an insult." OMG SO TRUE. Bless my mom, she really tries, she thinks she's being supportive but telling me I just need to rank the best I can because my best isn't that good really isn't the pep talk I needed.

I’m a Japanese and my mom is exact same kind of person like Jimmy’s mother. I’ve been having a hard time about the relationship with her, but he just told me how to. I just need laugh at it!!! Just assume they are from different generation. Thank you Jimmy!

Love this guy, he’s so relatable! My grandmother is from Okinawa, I’ve had the honorable displeasure of living through a lot of his stand up material.

Honestly, younger Asian people tend to be most polite people you’ll ever meet, and older Asian people tend to be the most rude people you’ll ever meet. I think they get to a certain age and just can’t hold it in any more and it all comes out.

I really admire him for being thick skinned enough to look back and make fun of Asian parenting. But actually living through it in real life was a nightmare for me.
