Empathy is definitely something you can improve. I remember having much less empathy in the first part of my life, probably because of my very high confidence, but when I changed schools and lost my confidence my empathy became much greater over several years

For those interested in learning more, the very broad, very general Buddhist terms for these meditative styles are: Non-dual awareness: Vipassana Focused meditation: Samatha Loving-kindness meditation: Metta

What I took away from the spontaneous thoughts section is that they are like dream seeds. If you were asleep, it would grow into a dream, but while awake it just shifts your focus into a new mode.

Fun fact : The "butterflies-in-your-stomach" is caused by a reduction of blood flow to your gut due to a fight-or-flight response

When you're the only one at the meditation class who can't do it.. it's pretty anxiety inducing.

The implications of this research is so fascinating! Like, how would the world change if we were able to feel more oneness, and more empathy?

My grandfather was part of the very early studies they did about brain waves while meditating

Would be interesting to see how this relates to Psychedelic Use and Ego Death

I haven’t had the best history with meditation because of my anxiety and ADHD. But one time when I was meditating, I felt one with the universe. It was an amazing feeling. I’ve been trying to have that same experience again ever since.🧘🏻‍♂️

That was a great video! I'd love to see a breakdown of the similarities between the skilled meditation experience and the effects of psychedelics. I've read some papers on it, but I still don't quite understand it yet. Would be great to get a more comprehensive version by the great SciShow psych team! <3

5:36 As an aspie myself, I can confirm this, as I had to artificially learn empathy and theory of mind, which neurotypical people usually develop on their own. Nowadays, I actually enjoy empathizing with people and/or "reading" them, and I think I've gotten pretty decent at it. Though, again, the keypoint here is that I had to be taught this artificially.

In addition to the extensive sources cited, I recommend books by co-authored by Andrew Newberg and Eugene G. d'Aquili on how meditation and religious/spiritual experiences occur within the brain and then benefits we atheists/agnostics can derive from them. Wonderful reading.

Anthony is getting a lot better at doing these videos! The teleprompter reading is a lot more fluid and natural. Keep up the great work!

this is so cool!! thanks for covering this! as someone who went to college for neuroscience and now is finishing up yoga teacher training, I absolutely love exploring and learning about the intersections of the two fields. people far too often get this idea that science and philosophy/mindfulness are somehow incongruous or diametrically opposed, but I see them as just two facets of the greater lens through which we can better understand ourselves, others, and the universe around us.
