Former president Donald Trump is facing a massive civil penalty after a New York judge found he had engaged in a scheme to fraudulently inflate his wealth to banks and other lenders. Trump has been ordered to pay nearly $355 million, and has been banned from running a business in New York state for three years. His companies and two eldest sons also face penalties. Astrid Martinez has more.

According to Trump supporters he has never been guilty of anything a day in his life.

There is no such thing as a victimless crime. If you conspire with others to harm, defraud, or exploit the vulnerabilities of others or an entire institution then you have willing committed a crime.

Why doesn't Trump just start acting like he's got dementia? Then he could be potus and not be legally accountable for anything. Right?

Overturning a judgment of this magnitude would require the appellate courts to find significant errors in law or a gross misinterpretation of the evidence presented in the original trial. The legal bar for reversing such a substantial decision is high. To even pause the enforcement of the judgment during the appeal, Trump may need to post a bond for the full amount of the fine ($355 million). It's uncertain whether he has that kind of liquidity.

Could you imagine if our judicial system having the same passion for bringing to light questionable net increases from all career politicians, in all branches of our government? I can’t, unless they publicly announced they are running for office. Man we’ve become to much like Russia.

"Their complete lack of.. remorse borders on pathological" Most companies would have handled this intelligently, saying something like "we don't admit doing anything wrong, but we respect the court and will adjust our practices". The penalty would have been a lot less. But his little ego kept him from doing the smart thing. He's not a good business leader. He's not a good strategic thinker. He is a good grifter.
