ICE cars mostly catch on fire in accidents. So do EVs. But unlike ICE cars, EVs can also catch on fire when they're just sitting there, often when charging. Maybe in your garage and EV fires are MUCH harder to put out. EVs are also being totaled from accidents that for an ICE car would be repairable because it's impossible to tell if the battery has suffered internal damage. That's why EV insurance is going through the roof.

The range is BS especially if you live in a winter wonderland charging takes 30-40 minutes (does filling your car...??) If the battery has issues or is toast it costs 000's to replace and if EV;s are so good then why in Cali are owners being asked not to charge between 4-9 cuz it s killing the power grids of the nation.

Which form of electric power generation causes the least environmental damage? Amusingly, the answer depends entirely on who's funding the study. Coal? The mining tears up the earth, and coal ash is very toxic. Wind turbines? They kill birds and the blades are currently not recycled. Natural gas, petroleum, photovoltaic, solar-thermal, hydro, etc. Each has significant downsides except for whichever form a given company is promoting and seeking shareholders to invest in.

Appreciate your work as always. I like your analogy to PCs in the 80s. I well remember being excited about my 8086 processor with 20 MB HD (!). -- and upgrading about annually thru 286, 386 finally stabiizing with pentium chips. I've been and remain quite interested in EVs and have been champing at the bit but I bide my time awaiting coming improvements in battery technology and, to a lesser degree, the charging infrastructure. I hope to/plan to keep my Honda Accord running until then.

On your first point, you used a study from Sweden showing there are less fires from electric cars than ICE vehicles. I would guess that there are less evs on the road than ICE vehicles and that should be factored into the figures. Also, it seems that when an ev catches on fire, it is often much worse than an ICE vehicle. Be well.

My biggest challenge, living in a condo, is the charging. I can’t think of having an EV until I’ve my own place and a charging setup. Otherwise in winters it’ll be very difficult to go out and charge my car.
