I noticed how much i've been feeding into that negativity bias recently and started to try and work against it. Mainly by avoiding negative videos in general and more focusing on positive videos about stuff i enjoy. For example challange videos, like a Halo Wars 0 Death Challenge, or hour long reviews of the games i love.
It's hard going against that bias, but it's also nice to just have a genuine smile on my face, while i listen to people gush about how they love Fallout New Vegas.

These negative video essays are a serious disease on YT. What you said about influence, I'd be lying if I said I didn't feel that these videos can cause people the mindlessly agree and start hating on something. It's so fucking tiring to see negativity like this everywhere on YT and spread like cancer. People often go on about how YT isn't as toxic as Twitter, TikTok or Reddit, but YT's toxicity lies in these 5-hour long negative video essays and feeling superior in hating popular things. Seems to be toxic Internet culture that's existed since the 2000s

I completely forgot Kingdom for Keflings existed until you brought it up, also I think it works well with your point. I played the hell out of it 10 years ago, and I can't think of a better example of a game you can absolutely love but hardly think about. Meanwhile I can think of 10 games/movies off the top of my head that I hate despite having never tried them because I watched a youtuber talk about it.

tbh, the last years I'm kinda fed up with all these negative vids I've seen and came to the same conclusion. Not saying everything is perfect and some things don't need sugarcoating if they're indeed bad (like a sloppy game or series with a lazy unoriginal story), but seeing a lot of youtubers going "this sucks because lol" is getting a bit exhausting. Sometimes after work and I just wanna check some new content on yt and just chill and have a laugh. Glad to see someone adress this or at least make people aware of it.

If ya think about it, it's just micro-focused dynamics that cable television and their ratings system already figured out: Controversy sells. At the end of the day, creators need to drive traffic, and that is easily done if you can constantly find things to get people miffed. People would rather watch Bum Fights and a montage of "people getting served" than watch a docu-series about a breakthrough technology that could revolutionize water filtration for impoverished places like Congo and India.

Yanno, I've been using youtube as my main source of entertainment ever since 2016 (in case you're wondering, no, by some miracle I don't currently have depression) and I've always known about how youtubers often exaggerate, but I love how this video goes into detail about the extent of it and why people are motivated to do it in the first place which is something I've never really seen before. Great video!

I love it when youtube recommends hate videos of movies/games/subjects that I've never even experienced thus have no opinions on. Recently I got a TON of "Jurassic World Dominion is THE WORST THING IMAGINABLE" type videos which is a movie I've never seen and so my impression at all these hateful videos was just "damn people, it's just a movie, calm down." Everything's so insanely vitriolic you sometimes wonder if their family was killed by a movie or something. I didn't like the previous JW movies so I just... didn't watch the new one because I knew I wouldn't care for it lol.
