Welcome to Part 2 in my 3 part series on Mr. Morale and the Big Steppers!

In this video I discuss the artistic vision presented in Disc 2, what it means for Kendrick as an artist and persona, and what it means to me as a person. It's a hard project to reconcile with, especially if you are someone that values Kendrick's perspective and his artistry. I hope you will join me for this long video as we wrestle with the demons Kendrick confronted on this album...

What do you think of this record? Let's talk about it in the comments!

Thanks so much for watching. Every subscriber/viewer means a lot to me, and I appreciate every like and comment. Let me know what you think about the video or the album and I'd love to have a discussion in the comments! Music is meant to be discussed to assimilate ideas and to grow as people.

I am a Christian and student and I made this channel when I was in high school. I started this channel because I love talking about music (specifically hip hop) and given that the genre seems to be going downhill, I want to be part of the community that preserves the expectation of great music and dissecting what makes a beautiful record. Dealing with a lack of friends to discuss these matters with, I hoped to start my own community that loves music just as I do, as well as to provide a unique perspective as a follower of Christ that also appreciates this community. I appreciate everyone who watches and I am truly happy to see anybody comment their thoughts on a project I talk about.

Put "THE CAT IS OUT THE BAG" as your comment if you read the description!

As always, thank you very much for watching and taking time out of your day to discuss music with me, God bless. Isaiah 55:8-12

Kodak Black was the perfection addition to this album. Kendrick is a kid from Compton he sees himself in Kodak and how things couldā€™ve gone for him. Ghetto Rap STARS

Yeah itā€™s really crazy how much this album grew on me. I always like it but itā€™s my second favorite of his now. Kendrick really does have the best discography out of any mainstream artist.

THE CAT IS OUT THE BAG Count me out is one of the songs I listen to when I find myself entering my complex ptsd, anxiety and depression. Itā€™s such a beautiful song and such a raw expression of vulnerability that it took me years to be able to give myself permission to share my own vulnerability and realize everything Iā€™ve been keeping inside my brain and heart were too much for me to face and sort out alone and find a therapist. Thereā€™s so many moments in this song that I relate to,ā€ look at myself in the mirror/amityville-I ainā€™t seen nothing scarier/I fought like a pit bull terrier/blood I shed could fill up aquariums.ā€ When heā€™s talking about wearing masks it can be so widely interpreted..wearing masks to hide your true face and feelings from letting everyone see, almost like the ā€œWojakā€meme..but also how during Covid masks became a worldwide part of life, nearly EVERYONE was wearing masks and you couldnā€™t see anyoneā€™s faces anymore. ā€œMask on the babies, mask on an Op/wear masks in the neighborhood stores you shop/but a mask wonā€™t hide who you are inside /look around, the realityā€™s carved in lies.ā€ Itā€™s such a powerful song, one of my most listened to. Thank you for this interpretation and breakdown of this masterpiece.

Auntie Diaries is my favourite song from the album. It really shows off Kendrickā€™s lyricism and humanity as a person. Him saying he chose humanity over religion and basically saying with the line: ā€œThe history had trickled down and made us ig'nantā€ That people are blinded by the past and need to get with the present.

I think you're misinterpreting the song Momma. It's a song about pride, humility, and finding purpose. The first verse is about pride in mastering his craft and the appreciation he feels that it gave him an opportunity to explore home. Home is Momma (AKA Africa=The Mother Land). The second verse takes that pride to another level and Kendrick expresses that he knows everything about the world and what it has to offer. By the end of that verse, he returns home, becomes humbled when he realizes that his knowledge was limited due to only being familiar with his immediate surroundings. Once he goes back home, he realizes that there is so much more to the world. The third verse, I don't think is as introspective as you make it seem. Kendrick actually went to Africa and identified with the people there. In the verse, he talks about how he had been brainwashed by American society and its ideas of what it means to be successful. Despite all of his accomplishments, he still felt empty inside because he had lost touch with what was really important in life. His journey to Africa enlightened him and he felt it necessary to be an advocate for his people still in America.

It is so right that you connected dots between this album and TPAB. Because DAMN. Felt like venting frustrations leading to different outcomes depending on what way you listen to it. TPAB and WWS are both introspective thoughts his impact on the world and the impact of the world on him. So thereā€™s more parallels. Thatā€™s my take at least

So glad I tuned in today. I can certainly say I relate to Kendrick. Itā€™s not that hope is lost, itā€™s the realization that it can be lost. Something Iā€™ve learned is that you canā€™t save everyone. Everybody needs to save themselves.

This was amazing. I literally almost cried a few times. I knew I felt this album was deeper but I just couldn't articulate how. This is what I felt though. And how I took it, whew, especially aunti diaries...I'm about to give that album a relisten with this refined perspective.

This is brilliant. I always felt like I was missing a big chunk of the story during my first listen to the album. This has added tonnes of context.
