a few years ago we were asked to contribute to a compilation called "for the kids too!" put out by nettwerk records to benefit the lili claire foundation, an organization that helps improve the lives of children (and their families) living with neurogenetic birth conditions.
the song could be a cover or an original. i'd always wanted to do a version of "inchworm," which i remembered from the hans christian andersen film, so proposed that. daniel suggested i write something. insisted is more like it, haha. well, i did have a sort of lullaby-ish guitar melody lying around that i'd never known quite what to do with...
as a kid i loved the moment when mister rogers would announce that the trolley was going to the land of make believe. the cool low piano would start, the trolley's bell would ring and suddenly we were somewhere far away. i liked the transistion more than anything that happened in the land of make believe, with one exception: henrietta pussycat saying "meow meow" before, and sometimes after, every sentence. that had always stuck with me (which made me enjoy the "meow" cop scene in super troopers even more, look it up if you don't know it).
i thought about that and began meowing along to the song, wrote a few words about a kitten too small for his mittens, and voila, kid tune! we've played it live a few times, which is a weird fit for a (ahem) serious rock and roll band, but getting a whole audience to purr is pretty great. it's also the soundtrack of a (probably obscure) nintendo game. but we've never put it out until now. give it a shot tonight if your kiddos can't fall asleep!

I've played this song from my Nintendo DS Catz game when I was little for my (then) stray kitten as she was fighting organ failure; comforting her thinkng that a song that made me feel better may help her too. Fast forward 15 years later she's now fighting abdominal cancer, but still purring through her final days. I play this song for her every night as she sleeps with me in hopes that if she does pass in her sleep, she passes peacefully listening to a familiar song and in loving arms. (Sappy, I know)

My sweet kitty at 16 years old passed away a couple weeks ago. I slept on the floor with her through her final moments and even played this song, which comforted her dearly. Being in my 20s and listening to this song with her will definitely be in my memory forever. Having her cuddled into me through her final breathes knowing she crosses the rianbow bridge happy and at peace is all I ever wanted for her. Thank you Nada Surf for making this ever nostalgic song a part of mine and my cat's life.❤️

This song hits differently now... I have been taking care of some stray kittens and helping them get homes. But... one passed away... a kitten that never got to grow into their mittens...

I don't think it was the intention of this song to make me cry and reflect on my relationship with death but it certainly accomplished that. Overall, I'd call this a positive experience.

Sometimes i feel like a kitten, weak, i can't defend myself before this wild world that surrounds me, this song makes me feel that way, it makes me wanna cry, but, at the same time, this reminds me of good times when i was little and i was so unconscious about life yet so happy.

I Dedicate this lullaby to my precious little buddy, a treasure who brightened my life. Phillips was a tabby cat who couldn’t meow, but if you peered into his eyes you only saw love. He never hissed, bit or scratched once (if you can believe that). He died of lymphoma last year. Phillips was literally an animal angel to me. I even experienced a few spiritual encounters with him a few months after he died; signs telling me I’m ok. I’m with God. He taught me love. Phillips will never grow into his mittens because he is eternal love wrapped in fur, no beginning or end.
I love and miss you little buddy!! Can’t wait to see you again one day

A few years ago I went to a record store (it was pretty small) with my dad and nada surf did a show there and we got to meet them and at the time I was cat obsessed (I mean I still am) but my dad told them I loved this song and they sang it there for me and I felt so special I hope everyone gets to feel like special feeling at least once in their life
