UNTIL IT'S TIME FOR YOU TO GO - BUFFY SAINTE MARIE

Perhaps best known from its hit cover version by Elvis Presley, here's the original by Canadian singer songwriter Buffy Sainte-Marie. Recorded for BBC TV back in 1971 for the show 'One in Ten'.

My older sister was a folkie from the early 60’s. She brought this home and I fell in love. I still have dreams about playing her records on the silvertone stereo I got for my 13th birthday.

Donovan didn’t write Universal Soldier. A true artist did. Thanks Buffy. You’re beautiful and brilliant.

Buffy wrote a nice song. BUT. elvis presley's studio recording of this song in 1971, is the GOLD STANDARD. TRUST ME. Elvis's voice is like a fine Bordeaux wine. Rich resonate warm lush complex tones.

Elvis did her a solid favor by covering this song and getting it played on the radio in the US when Nixon and J. Edgar had her blacklisted. I'm sure it boosted the royalties she made off of it.

Was just reminded of her and this song while commenting in a WSJ article. So I had to come and listen, again; it has been many decades. I still love this song and her exquisitely different voice.

This is a gut wrenching farewell song 😭, & at the same time poetic in it's honesty 🤨.

I really love the lyrics "I was an oak, but now a willow and I can bend." Gorgeous imagery. My favorite cover is by a young Michael Nesmith in 1965, pre-Monkees. He kept Buffy's lyrics, singing it intimately and full of sorrow.

Elle me tire des larmes cette Buffy Sainte Marie! Merci Buffy de nous avoir donné une si belle chanson. Je vais essayer de la produire à l'accordéon...

I had not listened to this raw and beautiful and gentle love song in many decades, but somehow it came to mind this morning. It remains a classic. This song is one of a kind.

One great singer songwriter and musician I would have loved to see perform in person! Did see Mary Travers perform in Akron, Ohio in December 1986. She smiled and said Hi to me! Sure made my evening! I was so elated! Saw Joan Baez perform on the Commons at Kent State University in August 1977! Marvelous voice and such a gifted songwriter and musician! Buffy is right up there! Very brave and very true to herself and her beliefs! Love her!
