Venice tests access fee for tourists | DW News

The city of Venice with its picturesque canals has long drawn visitors from around the world. But the city's charm has a downside, too: Venice is suffering from too much tourism.

This week it became the first city in the world to charge tourists a fee to enter. Anyone visiting the city for a day trip must pay five euros during a trial which runs through most of July. It's hoped the fee will help protect the UNESCO World Heritage Site from overtourism.

For more on this, we talk to Jane da Mosto. She's the Co-Founder and Executive Director of "We are here Venice" – a local organization 'dedicated to the conservation of Venice as a living city’.

It's very expensive to maintain the historical buildings, conservation should be top priority

This is not the solution to the problem. If we continue down this path these things will only be for the rich.

People pay hundreds of euro to travel/visit Venice. Another 5 € will not help over congestion.

Last time I checked, an Espresso at Caffè Florian costs 7 euros. A frigging Espresso.

I agree! These buildings are constantly suffering from water filtration and other issues! The funds would benefit the restoration and maintenance.

I was just in lovely Venice and we paid a tourist fee at our hotel (4€ per day if i recall correctly). I did not find it absurd. But i suggest they charge those who come for the day from the mainland vs tourists who pay for hotels and 3 meals a day etc. Thank you Venetians for sharing your beautiful home

I liked her thoughtful response, very well considered and to the point, yet the journalist didn't seem to get it.

I was there fifteen years ago and it was jam packed with people. All of the major sites in Italy, France are jammed to rafters with people in the summer. So much so I would think real hard on going there during those times. I can see why Venice is doing this. Gorgeous city.

Totally understandable.

Not even 50 euros would put a dent to the number of tourists. Maybe 100 would deter students.
