The number of new and expectant mothers in England getting specialist support for mental health problems has almost doubled in the last three years, ITV News has learned.

Data from NHS England shows more than 57,000 women received treatment in the last year, that's up a third compared to the year before.

It can feel like “the end of the world” one woman who experienced postpartum psychosis told ITV News.

We’ve been given permission to film at the Ribblemere Mother and Baby Unit in Lancashire, a psychiatric ward where women are treated with their babies.

Shutting down children's centres have contributed towards this. Lack of family support as well and rise in childcare cost. The pressure of breast feeding as well.

Our GPs just tell us to look at a website for MH issues. The whole social care system has broken down.

Having a child is the most life-changing experience you can go through.. nothing at all can prepare you for it... you really need a support system as doing it alone is just impossible... the worlds changed so much... families and community would help raise children now women do it completely alone we're an isolationist society.. and the father if he's around has to work so women are alone.... this is the route of it believe me

5-10% of women can experience post partum thyroiditis in the first six months following childbirth, yet it is NOT routinely tested. Initially the thyroid may be overactive and if not detected the thyroid may become damaged and then become underactive for life. Amongst other problems it can affect the mother's ability to produce milk and breastfeed. Symptoms can be mistaken for "baby blues", but can seriously affect a new mother's ability to cope due to difficulty in concentration, tiredness, anxiety, insomnia amongst other symptoms.

I remember a woman from my country off origin (Poland), who had post-birth psychosis. They didn’t allowed her to be with her child (even supervised), and she was constantly panicking that her child died…

Why anybody would have a child is beyond me, especially in a crumbling failing society like the UK

Having children later in life must be part of the issue. I would also link social media as part of the problem.

It's so essential that we handle this properly and respond to the need quickly, if we don't it will be our children and grandchildren who will pay the price. Incredible brave mums, thank you for sharing your stories.

Hyper vigilant mothering instinct can’t ignore what’s bubbling under the surface in relationships and wider society. Is it any surprise?

Mmm, I wonder what recent development could have crossed the blood brain barrier & caused mental issues🤔

For the last 30 years pregnant women and new mums and those supporting them have been encouraged to be aware of their mental health and to look for the sighns of post natal depression and quite rightly too . Women are recognising symptoms and are seeking help .poor maternity mental health is being driven by the cost of living crisis, lack of affordable housing and child care and massively over stretched maternity care in the nhs. Midwives and health visitors are an amazing first line of support for mums ,if you dont get help at the right time things can rapidly escalate. I had my first child 30 years ago and my last 20 years ago, the difference in the levels of support between my first and last was shocking, then and i dred to think what new mums now receive. We are storing huge problems for our future if we dont sort this out now.

Sad things happening, I would suggest proper diet plan and continue physical exercises may help. In my culure usually as soon as you give birth you go to your parents home and stay there at least 1 to 2 months, some stays even 6 month and family will take care of your food and massaging with oil to new mum body and baby like that. Nowadays we do not see often because of our lifestyle. As I am Christain, the faith gave me courage and support in my tough times.

The government should give some support for mum's and the baby because the cost of living goes up!
