Great video! I'd love to see more like this.
To say Kant answers all the questions of his day is a bit too high of praise for him. He certainly gives some answers, but on the really important ones (e.g. phenomena and noumena, discussed here) I think his answers were untrue and in fact disastrous for philosophy.
I'm grateful that information theory has for the most part tossed asunder the distinction between "what is out there" and "what we see," albeit it has done so unintentionally.

Great video Scott! I'm an art critic and these ideas are implicit in everything I do, the judgment of art and the judgment of spirits both have to grapple with the philosophy of judgment if you want to take them seriously. I've read very little of Kant himself but enough of other philosophers engaging with him to know and respect his thinking in broad strokes. I think I'll crack open my CPR to the Fourth Paralogism today...
Have you seen Philippe Collin's film of The Last Days of Immanuel Kant? It's an adaptation of the De Quincey which I gather is pretty farcical, but the movie is well-done and surprisingly funny. It might be the only good biopic of a philosopher ever made? Definitely worth a watch for any Kant lover, you can find it on youtube.

Due to a deep and probably axiomatic investment I have in what is most closely adjacent to the āabsurd,ā I have a fundamental skepticism of all grand projects of thought, and Kant stands tall in that regard. That said, not only is that really probably the underlying spirit of his inquiry (as you also said), but even if the grand structure of his thought is, all as grand structures of thought are, ultimately a failure, it is admittedly one of the most spectacular failures in the history of at least European philosophyā¦ and for that he definitely has my respect, even if the abstruseness of his writing most definitely does not š
Anyway, mostly came here to say sorry for tempting you to take the dive on a bottle of the Leopoldās butā¦ equally so Iām very happy that thatās the degree to which you enjoyed it!

Immanuel and the CPR was the only class I actually taught at university (FYI: Australian grad students don't teach that much). In retrospect, I wish I'd started the semester giving something like your excellent 27 minutes on what Kant did and why it matters. Cheers, and happy 300th birthday to the Sage of Kƶnigsberg.

Thanks for this very interesting topic and discussion.
I was just at the Leopold Bros distillery and tried the three chamber rye. I thoroughly enjoyed it and bought two of the 200mL bottles. My first product was the BIB Bourbon, which is also one of the tastiest Bourbons I've had to-date. I hope you enjoy their products. Let us know what you think.

That was a bit indulgent but I'm the happier for it. I'm a philosophy graduate too and remember my Kant and the Critique of Pure Reason. I really enjoyed that work. Is he 'the best' Scott? Is he the best ever in the world? I'll raise a glass to the old duffer, he's certainly a good one. I just had a quick peek at all the other goings on in 1724 and it's a rather interesting year. Bach and Handel are knocking out the good stuff and there's some pretty interesting politics of course. Cheers. š·

These bonus videos are so fantastic. Please keep finding ways to connect your philosophical knowledge with the interest in spirits.
