I love how certain sounds and instruments get more prominent over the years. For example the electric guitar from the late 60s and then the 70s (Rolling Stones, Animals, Led Zeppelin) the bass drum in the 4 to the floor rhytm from the late 70s to the 80s (Bee Gees, YMCA) the revival of heavy guitars in the late 80s and begin of 90s (Cranberries, Nirvana, Guns n Roses), and then in the 00s it gets really diverse, with influences from Latin and RnB music as well.

I feel a bit robbed that Bad or Smooth Criminal wasnโt the most recognized song of 1987, but I respect it for the incredibly out of the blue Rick Roll lmao.
(Edit): A lot of people have been commenting that this list is based off of what is most recognizable today instead of what was most recognizable at the time. That makes the most sense tbh.
