Super Local, The Designers Transforming Waste Around the World - Wonderful Waste

Dutch Designers Pim & Luc have devoted themselves to reducing waste and creating sustainable products hand in hand with local communities. As Super Local they’ve designed ways to stop the burning of plastic in the Himalaya and recycle it at 8000 meters up, turning tourist generated waste glass trapped on Zanzibar into sustainable furniture and concrete, and built hospital playgrounds out of scrap metal and old cars. They spend months to years in developing regions around the world working as partners with locals to reduce and repurpose waste, and directly benefit their community. They see waste as a resource, both something that can be reused and reduced through design that looks beyond the consumers of the top 10%.

We need more people like these guys. There not solving all the problems but one small problem at a time.

The fact that they asked the locals and the workers what they needed most and then designed from that point is essential. I'm in awe of not only their intelligence but the beauty of their design solutions. Congrats to Pim and Luc but also NTS for highlighting their work.

I wasn’t sure what to expect when I saw the image for this never too small video and naively didn’t understand or think too much about the caption but I ended up feeling quite emotional about what these amazing people have achieved. From the play ground to the hospital equipment to the tourist gifts to the glass bricks. Such great ideas, putting our waste back to work and a small but meaningful step to a circular economy. This was awesome and inspiring!

Love everything about these guys. So creative, amazing values. The shame is, large corporations and governments are not being responsible with the planet. Profits are more important. And though what these guys are doing is super needed, I don't think we'll be able to recycle our way out of the climate crisis that we are facing. Governments and big industries have to play a part as well. But this was super inspiring.

This book was a great resource for ideas, practical advice youtube.com/post/Ugkx-b91_bYU48sOwHX-XC49tRRXRxcnO… and pro tips I purchased the plans for the 10'x16' colonial and used them for the basics and made my own modifications. I built my shed for storage and lawn equipment, but decided to sheath and side it in case I ever wanted to add insulation and turn it into a shop or bunkhouse. I poured over this book all winter while I planned and found it to be the all-around best shed book out there.

As I sit in my kitchen I realise that so many of my storage items came as "packaging". Sitting on my couch I look at wooden wine crates in a sideboard, empty wine bottles for plants, an old cigar box holding my guitar accessories , old milk bottles for water bottles. Packaging used to be of value. Sadly it's not so much the badly designed convenience objects we can buy cheaply that are causing the pollution but the packaging of everyday necessities.

What a brilliant vision. Some of these creations are so innovative but they're actually incredibly practical, worthwhile and special too.

As a freshly graduated designer in Portugal, I saw in this video hope and a path that i want to pressuit. I want to be part of the change, and being a designer gave me that power. Thank you for showing that design isn't necessarily producing new things but also reinvent the "old" into new.
