We have an obligation to obey legitimate authority, but those who misuse authority or exercise it corruptly and for illegitimate ends, forfeit the right to demand or expect obedience. Liberal bishops, and those who perpetrate or cover up sexual abuse, forfeit any right to expect obedience. The idea that authority per se should always be obeyed is Martin Luther's perversion of St Paul, even though the hypocrite Luther himself did not follow it.
