The song "Cigarettes Out the Window" by TV Girl is about a woman named Liddy who smokes cigarettes when she can't sleep. She tries to quit smoking but never really does, instead just tossing her cigarettes into the night. The song is a reflection on the emptiness of life, as the chorus indicates: "Cigarettes out the window/ You'll find moonlit nights strangely empty/ Because when you call my name through them there will be no answer." The lyrics suggest a feeling of loneliness and isolation, since the protagonist cannot share her worries and fears with anyone. The introduction and ending of Victor Jory's song give the impression that cigarette smoking is a form of theatrical performance and adds to the sense of loneliness experienced by the narrator. The song finally concludes with the line: "Somehow it makes the performance better." This speaks to how the mundane and seemingly meaningless aspects of life can still be appreciated and used to make art.

I love this song. It's comforting, and has a good sound to it. I have a dad who smokes, and drinks whenever he was 15. He's 40 now, and he decided to quit smoking. He got a heart disease due to smoking, so he kinda had to stop. He has a machine to read his heart weight to know if he relapsed, or not. I love my dad, and he's doing better❤
Edit: my dad relapsed during the summer, but I believe in him ^^

Lyrics :
My girl Liddy used to always smoke
Cigarettes when she couldn't sleep
She'd disappear for an hour and a half
And when she'd come back she'd brush her teeth
But I could still smell it on her raggedy tee
And I could taste it on her lips when we kiss
Poor little Liddy used to always quit
But she never really quit
She'd just say she did
Cigarettes, (oh-oh)
Cigarettes, (oh-oh)
Cigarettes, (oh-oh)
Cigarettes, (oh-oh)
My girl Liddy used to always smoke
Cigarettes when she couldn't sleep
I wonder what she did when she got done
I guess she'd just flick them out in the street
Poor little Liddy, she wishes it was dark
But it's never really dark in L.A.
The light from the billboard always shines
But it changed twelve times since you went away
Cigarettes, (oh-oh)
Cigarettes, (oh-oh)
Cigarettes, (oh-oh)
Cigarettes, (oh-oh)
We'll find moonlit nights strangely empty
Because when you call my name through them
There will be no answer
Rather melodramatic, aren't you?
We'll find moonlit nights strangely empty
Because when you call my name through them
There will be no answer
You mind if I smoke?
We'll find moonlit nights strangely empty
Because when you call my name through them
There will be no answer
I always smoke in the theater
We'll find moonlit nights strangely empty
Because when you call my name through them
There'll be no answer
Somehow it enhances the performance

I had a boyfriend, he was my first love. He had problems with smoking, alcohol etc.I always tried to help him and hid his cigarettes, alcohol and the other stuff, but it made it even worse and he sometimes beat me up because of it. He often told me he didn't drink or smoke but i could always smell it. It just got worse and worse and he ended up taking his own life, this song reminds me so much of him. May he rest in peace.

it’s such a weird song for me it describes this foreign feeling of mine of just being completely out of it nothing makes sense, nothing matters, it’s just me and my thoughts, the world hardly even matters anymore. it’s just me isolated in my room all alone with a feeling i can’t describe. i’m just there with my ultimate existence. with little to no emotion just confusion. the insomnias really getting to me guys i don’t know what’s up anymore. it’s eating me whole, i cant differentiate right from wrong, up and down. it’s something other worldly. i’m not happy or sad, i’m just accepting this feeling of just existing. rather than living im letting the days and life pass me by. i watch the sun both rise and fall, and still i’m here wondering why and who i am.
