Hey I am sponsored by Turso, an edge database. I think they are pretty neet. Give them a try for free and if you want you can get a decent amount off (the free tier is the best (better than planetscale or any other))

The best explanation about Apache 2 license is "Like BSD 2-clause license + patent clause, but well written." I used to license my code as GPL v2+ but I've later changed to MIT or Apache 2.0 licenses later. And yes, I'm one of the weird ones that actually reads and tries to understand the licenses.

I’m guessing the “no docker for dev” take comes from working with languages that have good tooling. E.g. Node has NPM and doesn’t tend to rely on system packages. On the other hand, I’ve recently worked in a couple of legacy PHP codebases which has been exceptionally painful precisely because they don’t use docker. So I need to install different versions of PHP, composer, system packages, PHP extensions etc. The versions needed are almost always undocumented, documented incorrectly, not available on my system, or some combination of the above. Converting these projects to use dev containers has made my life SO MUCH easier, especially since some of my coworkers use Mac and some Linux. I’ve had the same experience working with systems level C/C++/Rust code, where Nix shell has been super helpful. TLDR; all local is only good if your language and ecosystem are optimised for it.

I’ve come around to your style of text highlighting. As a compulsive highlighter myself, I love how you can easily and clearly see the beginning and end of the highlighted statement(s).

I'll believe it when I don't need an internet connection and user account to build

We have always believed [building in the open will lead to a better result] links to a faq page where they say "Mojo is a big project and has several architectural differences from previous languages. We believe a tight-knit group of engineers with a common vision can move faster than a community effort". After their "millions times faster" benchmarks they (authors) haven't got better and I'm sure there's more to come.

If a language is not open source, it is a DSL to me.

So it is still not fully open source? I get that it can be expensive, but if you know have to consider legal issues if you want to use Mojo, that is like one more reason not to use it (I am also not sold on Mojo in general, but yea)

Lmfao re the Good Luck With That Shit license part. Omg, I know a fair bit about licensing due to my work with Black Duck and that riff on licensing had my crying I laughed so hard. And, I had not heard of this license so goes to show how just when you think you know something, someone proves there is always more to learn. 😮 and, my new favorite license is GLWTS, replacing the “beer” license. 🎉

Your triangle is missing one more level — it is the one my team uses — you run locally but have it connect to the cloud to use an existing environment and you must use the cloud to trigger the events. It is the most complicated setup and I find it difficult to use when debugging as you sometimes need to check the logs on the cloud side instead of your local debugger. I prefer just pushing the code and having one source of truth to observe.

I mean you kinda have to like Mojo if you have listened to Lattner talk about compilers, the guy is brilliant.

there are times when shit breaks in prod and you can't figure it out in any other environment. As in, the problem only happens in production. I've had to do it and it blows, but it sucks more to have an angry manager "why is prod broken?"
