The singer admitting his son was like him is such a punch to the gut. What a cautionary tale.

This song is about breaking generational patterns. There is always time for your kids. Even 15 minutes of being focused on your child makes them feel like you care. No job, hobbies, errands, etc is worth depriving your child of having your love, support and emotional availability. Don't let another day pass by. Make it your priority to show your children affection. Yes we all have to work and life can get busy and hectic. But the fact is you decided to bring your child into the world. Therefore it's your obligation to water that seed and look after it as it grows.

As a retired Marine, now 61, with a 38 yr old son, and 3 grandsons, this song has special meaning to me. It makes me cry, I was THIS Dad to my son.I LOVE HIM, and try to pay it back through my grandsons!

The saddest part about this song is that "we're gonna have a good time then" part never comes......

My dad was never around much due to a serious drinking problem. I lost him when I was 18 and he was only 53. Now im 26 and my wife and I have adopted a baby boy. Im gonna be the dad I wished for all those years ago.

My dad used to play this while he drove me to school in his old red Toyota truck. I always had the lyrics to this song stuck in my head and I finally found it. My dad is currently in the hospital paralyzed from a head injury. I love him so much and this makes me both happy and sad. Edit: He passed away May 29th

I know my Dad watches this video. Sadly this is one of his favorites because he feels he relates so well. I've been crying and scrolling through thousands of comments to see if my dad commented. Joel, Dad, it's not too late. You didn't fail. I love you. Let's take a trip to the hobby store and get some lunch this weekend! šŸ˜‹

I spent 22 years in the Marine Corps. I got sent on deployments all the time including the first gulf war. I didn't get as much time with my son as I wanted. This song hits home hard now because I'm retired and my son is working and living his life and does not have time for me. Hard lesson to swallow. Dads, spend time with your kids.

My dad would always play this for us and cry.. I never understood when I was a kid that he was trying to say he was sorry for not being there more for usā€¦ now dads in hospice and nothing is more clear to me. My daughter is the most important thing in my life thanks to what you taught me, even though you didnā€™t realize the lesson you were teachingā€¦ I love you dad. I will see you in heaven one day.

Never realized that the chorus changes half way through the song when his son comes home from College. The chorus is normally "When you comin' home Dad? I Don't know when" and after College it changes to "When you comin' home Son? I don't know when" That's brilliant, love this song even more now.

My father heard this on the radio one night about 7 years ago with me in the car (I was 16). He was battling alcoholism and he started crying. I was jaded and just rolled my eyes... heā€™s been sober every since..and now Iā€™m the one shedding tears. Thanks Dadā¤ļø Edit: coming back a year later and seeing all the support everyone is giving each other really restores my faith in humanity. I love all of you guys and this is a precious corner of the internet for me. My father and I have an amazing relationship now. Nobody can ever know how one man or women is struggling in silence, gasping for air. I pray for everyone going through their own hardships , and also pray for the wounded to let the pain go if possible. God bless ā¤ļø

Listening to this song now that my son's graduated and started working, I gotta say... Don't work graveyards. It ain't worth it. You work the nights, you sleep the days, and you miss everything. Your life is worth more than any paycheck, find life.

my dad wasnā€™t PHYSICALLY absent but he was always emotionally absent. ā€œnobody caresā€ ā€œdonā€™t give me excusesā€ ā€œuse your brainā€ ā€œwork comes firstā€ kind of mentality. Itā€™s helped me get through school for the most part, but Iā€™m emotionally and socially stunted and starting to burn out from depression and overworking. And heā€™s the same way. I live every day hoping Iā€™m at least more empathetic and understanding of people.
