Fighting Giygas for the first time gave me nightmares as a kid, but fighting him again as an adult, i Pity him more then feeling scared. His Journey from being an alien trying to conquer the world to a Whirlpool of evil is reallly messed up when you start thinking about him as a character.
The very reason you defeat Giygas in the first game was singing a lullaby that he values more then anything else. He couldn't conquer earth because of his bond to Maria, and his dislike of having to detach from her. We don't know what happens between his retreat from earth and getting sealed into the devils machine. but all i imagine is him having to suffer mentally and eventually losing himself.
The boss fight itself in Earthbound is having you to pray for help. Something which he can't handle, he becomes more unstable and each prayer does more damage to him. A part of me feels he is suffering even if he can't talk sense at all. One part that made me depressed to realize, is when Ness's family is praying for their safety, which causes Giygas to go to the next "disorded phase" is because it reflects the same thing Giygas values most: Maria.
And finally you defeat him by the player having to pray for thier safety, and the video shows us what happens, his sprite stops, a nasty sound plays, and then the music changes to something that sounds someone is in pain. Pokey escapes, and Giygas dies, ending the battle and perhaps his misery. i hope he get's to see Maria in the afterlife.

Still to this day cannot believe Itoi just woke up one day and decided to create an Eldtritch seizure foetus that has actually lost its entire mind and speaks fluent gibberish and had it be the final boss for his game about psychic toddlers learning what life is like outside their homes and expected everyone to be okay with it.
