Best song on the album, this and Star Treatment. Coming from someone who was never much of a fan, but nonetheless a contemporary, and can recall their early stuff all too painfully nostalgically. I was 15 when their debut came out, in the middle of GCSEs. Every lad in the quadrangle suddenly looked like Alex Turner. Truth was they did already, seeing as this was also Yorkshire in 2005... He painted the life we knew, never realising how much it would change, once you leave school. This album charts quite the trajectory, though, and necessarily so. Appreciate the sense of techno-dystopian alienation, 21st century 'end of history' melancholy, cut-and-paste modernism mashup, entropy, insularity, not quite knowing where to turn next at this strange turnpike in life, and 30 looming ever nearer for me now. I can connect to that, and will always be interested to see where they go in their work for that reason, even if my own musical interests lie elsewhere.
