ā€œNewfound zest for lifeā€ is apparently code for midlife crisis

My oldest uncle (early 60s) married a woman my age (early 30s) about 8 years ago. She wasn't a gold digger just an idiot (He didn't have much money, had 5 children, four of which were older than her) but since her family and ours went way back and he was all about enjoying live she married him and had two more children with him. Well, 3 years ago he had a major stroke and now he's wheelchairbound, can't do anything by himself and has a hard time even speaking. She managed to keep up the wife act for about a year then she got a new boyfriend, moved him in and is hardly taking care of her husband. She gets hate from the family, he gets a wife that wants to live her life instead of caring for her husband. That's what you risk with big age gaps.

How stupid is it to try to discourage a child from reading anything? Sister should be thankful her child is reading at all! My grandmother came to visit once and brought me some monster comic books to read. When my mother criticised the subject Grandma said, "First get him reading. Then work on taste." The issue is the kid going through her drawers. OP has a very stupid sister.

OP with husband who is chronically late - but only to things involving her - needs to give that man ultimatums! Isn't it odd he is NOT late to work? Something that he enjoys or that pays him. Interesting. So, next time they are to meet, say for dinner, after 15 minutes at the most, order and start eating. He may or may not get there in time to eat dessert with OP. Going to the movies? Leave at the allotted time and just go. He will learn that it is important to OP and he needs to respect HER time. As it stands now, he doesn't respect OP or her time spent wasted waiting on him - 'it's just how I am' is the BS excuse given. She needs to use it too, when just going without him/eating without him/ etc.

The 2nd story, OP's sister uninvited him from Thanksgiving, I'd say great, now I don't have to hear her gossip about people she doesn't and will never know. Seriously, OP's niece calls gossiping a hobby? Since when is gossiping about people, strangers a hobby? It's like saying that spreading cruel rumors about people is a hobby. And this girl is 19, she needs to do something better with her time and she needs to realise that not everyone has the same likes and interests as she does. Of course OP is NTA, can't understand why he thinks he might be.

Story 3: or you could remind all of them that it's your house and you can keep your books wherever you want. You kept them in the drawer in your does where the kid had no business going into, which you weren't obligated to do, so no you shouldn't have taken your books to work because your nephew went through your stuff. And you don't have to pretend your sister is right because BIL doesn't want to have to deal with her huffing and puffing, they can just get out of your house.

Iā€˜m sure I read Agatha Christie Novels before I was 12. Helicopter mom? I have hundreds of books, would she expect me to drive a lorry to work to be able to take all non-approved books with me? There is a simple solution: teach your child not to take other peopleā€™s stuff without permission.

If hubby can be on time for work, he can be on time for everything. PLUS he was only running 10 minutes late until he got a ring on OP's finger. Then he let his bullshit hang out by being later and later. This isn't going to improve because he doesn't want to improve it. He dismisses OP's thoughts and feelings because "he can't help it." Except when he can. I am not in this situation and I'm not suggesting OP should leave. But the lateness compounded by lack of respect, care and kindness for his wife... well, she should give it some thought.

Story 1 YTA Dating your secretary who is half your age...and then you expect your daughter to believe that only after the divorce you noticed said secretary....how much of that new zest for life was really about the secretary. Is she a gold digger maybe and maybe not but the relationship is entirely inappropriate to begin with because you are her boss thus NEVER should have gotten involved with her to begin with.

Story 3: Discouraging someone from reading literature is ridiculous. Also, the most sure-fire way to make someone want to do something is to forbid it. Every time some culture war fool screeches about banning books, sales for that book go up. At the bookstore I work in, we always have a surge in demand for a book when neurotic control freaks try to get it banned.

I love how people ways bring up younger generations being like this or that, when A. Older generations raised them like that and B. The behavior is common with EVERY GENERATION. Like not doing this or that, acting out or being entitled/rude has been attached to every younger generation since the dawn of time.

Story 1: look I'm not going to lie the age Gap the fact that you used to work under you, and how she used to be a secretary does not help you man. But the fact that we're talking about a woman in her thirties and not a naive 20 year old to me is a factor in this. Don't get me wrong anyone can be manipulated, but middle-aged feels like we're not talking about a naive child, we're talking about someone who is younger but probably knows what they're getting into. Also I feel like a year is not cutting it close enough to speculate cheating. Is it short after having a divorce, maybe but I wouldn't assume cheating. And since your daughter actually hasn't gotten to know her I don't think there's enough to go off of to assume she's a gold digger just yet.

Story 2: you know while some people do deserve to get canceled because they've done terrible things, most of the time celebrities get canceled for little to nothing. Unless an actual serious crime was committed by this actor that caused Great pain to this NSYNC member who cares. And your niece was so busy criticizing you that she never stopped and actually asked if you knew anything about this controversy before judging you, even then one person does not change the entire movie, that one actor didn't single-handedly create that movie. And then that crap about it being hard for her to move, what does that have to do with anything? And your sister either codles her daughter or did not get the real story and decided to punish you without even hearing your side of the story.
