I was playing an Elvis CD on a road trip late at night and I heard this for the first time. Man this one is powerful. It hurts you a little. This and "girl of my best friend" feel similar to me, although this is sadder and is sung better. They're both sad and feel haunting, you believe Elvis felt so alone and you experience it with him. Maybe Elvis didn't mean any of this and was just reading lines. But the man had so many women obsessed with him you can really believe he had some desires and relationships that were too overwhelming for him to deal with. You can believe the pain of this song despite the production value. Usually songs this touching and real are done with just one instrument and raw vocals, Elvis could do both extravagant and powerful at the same time.
