I think you guys missed the last verse: "Free Falling" - he thought his life would be better without her - he'd have freedom from commitment / obligation - but without her - his life is actually in free fall. My own 2 cents. I'm glad you two did Tom Petty. A wonderful artist that I have grown more to like now than during his peak commercial years in the '80s. Thanks for your reactions.

He’s free but there’s a touch of melancholy in it. He’ll remember her, but he’s moving on into wide open spaces. It’s less about him playing her, then he’s a fringe character, she’s the good girl and they’ll never fit. She fell for him, drawn to the bad boy type, but he’s not the suburban, white picket fence guy and has to walk away.

The lyrics deal with Los Angeles culture, mentioning actual places in the area: Reseda, Mulholland and Ventura Boulevard. It implies that the people of LA will casually use others for personal gain, as the singer has just dumped a girl and doesn't even miss her. Petty was born and raised in Gainesville, Florida and moved to LA with The Heartbreakers in 1974. His outsider perspective came in handy in this song.

When the world was out of their minds, there was Tom Petty, He was a retreat for people who wanted to get away from B.S.
Tom Petty would come on radio and we would just relax. His music took us to nice and different places mentally.
RIP
The Peaceful Rock Star
Stop Jamming me was the haters we tried to escape, Tom made a song about them being the people who they are and just leave us be.

Tom Petty is, quite simply, one of the greatest American songwriters. And nobody else has ever sounded like him and the Heartbreakers. (Best played while rolling down the highway.)
