LYRICS

Jami was a good friend
Back when we were kids and my father got sick
We would hang out on the weekends
In her house by the cathedral where all the good people
Got dressed up on a Sunday
To go and spill their secrets no matter who the preacher was
We used to find that funny
But it’s easy when you’re young not realize that you’re lucky

When the last of your friends are gone
You learn a whole lot about hanging on
But if you crash and nobody sees
Just remember there will always be
A room for you in my house in the trees

Aaron was a good friend
We were in our twenties, we drove across the country
Then moved into the canyon
And he looked after the business the year that I got sick
Then we went off in different directions
Kept in touch but it never was the same
I never got to thank him
But I wrote it in a letter
I’m sure I”ll send it someday

When the last of your friends are gone
You learn a whole lot about hanging on
But if you crash and nobody sees
Just remember there will always be
A room for you in my house in the trees

I am a lucky man
I have been so many places
When I dream it seems I’m chasing
A bittersweet memory

When the last of your friends are gone
You learn a whole lot about hanging on
But if you crash and nobody sees
Just remember there will always be
A room for you in my house in the trees

When you reach your mid 30’s this means so much. I sure do miss my high school friends. We still talk, but it no longer has meaning.

i just moved across the country at the age of 30 for my job, away from all my friends and family back home. As supportive and encouraging as they were, it wasn't easy for them. This is my song for them. No matter where life takes us, we'll always have our experiences and memories.

This song for some reason gives me 70s music vibes. Love it.

Great song. I'm in the same life stage as Andrew, pretty much all my highschool and college era friends have moved away/had families. We're all too busy now. Connections fade away.

Ever since I first heard this, it’s been my favorite song across the entire Andrew McMahon catalog, and I think I recently figured out why it resonates so much… and it’s because it’s Konstantine for your mid-late-30s. Hear me out. Why did Konstantine gain such a following? Because it resonated. Andrew was young. His fans were young. It was relatable, and the lyrics and instrumentation were amazing. Now, Andrew and all those same fans are in their mid to late 30s. We’ve all grown, but just like Konstantine captured how we felt in our early 20s, House in the Trees captures how we feel now, as adults, doing our own things, while still reminiscing about growing up.

I was really missing my friends tonight. They all live elsewhere or are married, and I did Thanksgiving alone this year because I recently had covid and didn't want to take a chance, so I was extra lonely. Then this song comes on my Pandora. It helped a lot, actually.

Favorite song on the album for sure. It’s the kind of song that speaks to your heart. It feels so much like his old stuff and yet still fresh. Love it so much.
