This movie is kinda like a DLC expansion for a game:
-It introduces a new plot, characters, etc..
-You got your protagonist from the main game who isn't important to the story but helps along the way.
-Little to no connection to the main story.
-In the end it really changes nothing for the protagonist or the main story but gives him some new shit to take home with.

I'd argue that Barbosa is the real protagonist of this movie; he's the one with the motivation and part of the driving force of the plot. Jack acts as more of a PoV character for the audience. I also don't mind Barbosa going back to being a pirate at the end of the movie, it really fits his character that he'd be a British privateer only as long as it suits him.

I liked the Spanish reason for hunting the fountain.
It made all of the men on their side doing it seem actually commited, and principled in their beliefs.
Even if the movie were to cannotocally give reason that their belief was wrong, they are still principled in believing what they are doing is truely right.
Because here it is not an instance of using your dogma to harm others, or take advantage of others. Here these men are purposefully destroying something that could benefit them greatly(temporal immortality) because they truely believe it to be correct.
That's a pretty damn cool driving reason to me.

I thought the whole "No one actually needs the fountain of youth was an intentional part of the whole story? Jack figured out it was a fools journey. Barbosa didn't care. And everyone who pursued the fountain ended up, at best, sort of succeeding. And at worst, getting royally screwed in a very avoidable way.

There is no Pirates of the Caribbean without Jack Sparrow.
