Y’all gotta understand that this song is a personal reflection of Troye’s past “relationship”. But, it also explores the broader concept of gay men (often in high school and or college) who meet up with much older men for hookups so that they can feel something. The young dating world is full of straight, healthy relationships, compared to the gay community which has extremely toxic relationships. High school / college aged gay guys don’t get to experience healthy relationships nearly as often as straights do, which has caused unhealthy hookups with much older men that are often made through dating apps like Grindr.

[Verse 1] I got these beliefs that I think you wanna break Got something here to lose that I think you wanna take from me You say that I'm asleep but I wanna be awake Got something here to lose that I know you wanna take [Pre-Chorus] And he said age is just a number, just like any other We can do whatever, do whatever you want Boy becomes a man now Can't tell a man to slow down He’ll just do whatever, do whatever he wants [Chorus] I went out looking for love when I was seventeen Maybe a little too young, but it was real to me And in the heat of the night, saw things I'd never seen Oh, seventeen [Verse 2] You should know I'm green but I'll find my way around Heard the whispers, now let's see what all the talk's about I'm taking in the sights and measuring the sounds Heard the whispers, now let's see what all the talk's about [Pre-Chorus] And he said age is just a number, just like any other We can do whatever, do whatever you want Boy becomes a man now Can't tell a man to slow down He’ll just do whatever, do whatever he wants [Chorus] I went out looking for love when I was seventeen Maybe a little too young, but it was real to me And in the heat of the night, saw things I'd never seen Oh, seventeen [Bridge] Oh, seventeen Seventeen, seventeen, seventeen Seventeen, seventeen, seventeen [Chorus] I went out looking for love when I was seventeen Maybe a little too young, but it was real to me And in the heat of the night, saw things I'd never seen Oh, seventeen I went out looking for love when I was seventeen Maybe a little too young, but it was real to me And in the heat of the night, saw things I'd never seen Oh, seventeen [Outro] Seventeen, seventeen, seventeen Seventeen, seventeen, seventeen

Some people won´t realize, until years later, about the emotional baggage of this song...so heart-wrenching

This song... i just feel the vulnerability and complexity in it. It’s speaks to the current maturity of Troye because the song is ambiguous enough to be interpreted in different ways (1 high-key concerning, another low-key concerning). It’s a song about being Seventeen that cant be writing by a seventeen year old, it’s based in reflection and I love that writing from Troye

“Beliefs you wanna break” “Got something here to lose that I think you wanna take” I always thought this song was happy but now actually hearing the lyrics it’s so sad and dark but still a bop
