I am leaving this comment, as a non-Patron, in support of your absolute right to run your content creation business however you darn-well please! The Bakery Bears and many others have been operating in this way for years, and it is the reason there is so much quality free content out there for us as knitters to consume.
For those who are upset by these choices, please realize the following:
#1 The amount and quality of free content that Tayler continue to put forth here is incredible. I have tried to have my own knitting podcast and it is so freaking much work. She is wise to find a way to offset/justify the time she gives us for free here.
#2 This KAL idea is very unique in its format because of the fact that it is not running off of an existing pattern, and the notes and insight she will be providing to KALers is so far and above what is typical of other KALs.
#3 As mentioned, I myself remain not a paying Patron of so many of the channels I love. Do I have FOMO over this sometimes, yes. But it is a budgetary choice I make each month for the sake of my own family, and almost every Patreon content creator Iāve heard speak on this is absolutely respectful of this fact as well.
#4 Have you considered your Holiday wishlist? For Mothersā Day this past year, my husband gave me cash to represent a āPatreon Gift Cardā (since they donāt have a way of gifting subscriptions currently) that I have used to be a drop-in Patron of some of my favorite creators throughout the year. (Sorry, Tayler, I had just finished it off right before you launched! Hereās to hoping for some Christmas Patreon šµ!)
#5 Finally, this is not an airport. You do not need to announce your departure. If this channel isnāt for you anymore (for whatever reason), simply stop watching. This is a solid case for Amy Poehlerās āGood for you, not for meā philosophy.

Taylor, you are amazing and your time is valuable! You went above and beyond in your responses and I really feel like you didnāt need to (but thatās who you are and Iām grateful you donāt ghost these comments). You have always been incredibly transparent on this channel and I remember the dark days when you were gone for long, LONG periods of time. Iām just glad that youāre here, youāre sharing all the things and that we get to have a cuppa tea together. ā¤

Sooo... I have mixed feelings about the Patreon thing. I do get that content creators need to be paid for their time and effort... but I think the thing that might be sticky for people is that it usually doesn't start out that way. It was never presented as 'I'm going to need this to be somewhat profitable and financially viable enough to meaningfully contribute to supporting my family'. It started as a 'join me on my yarn dyeing/sewing/knitting journey'. With advertisements that garner some nominal earnings, which we all know that by watching we ARE supporting the channel we are viewing. So fiber folks got drawn into your channel and now there is content that they can't have access to unless they pay, even though they've supported with views and THEIR time along the way. It's a lil sticky...
In the end, it isn't even about how much Tayler needs this channel and Patreon and WNH yarn/merch to earn her in income, it's how the consumers of her product feel about paying for content.

I completely respect that itās a content creatorsā decision how to manage their businesses, including what platforms to post on, what content is on each, and how they manage the paid vs. unpaid aspects. In this case, it seems like a pretty dramatic shift to Patreon, not to the point that Iām going to stop watching; I just feel like Iām being strongly encouraged to move to another platform to ācontinue the party.ā I donāt know about the average Patreon patrons, but I primarily use Patreon to support smaller channels whose content I particularly enjoy for exactly the reason that I want to help support the channel on YouTube. As I make videos in my work, I recognize how much work it is. I also realize that if I were to pay for the educational and entertainment content in the analog world, it would cost me more than a few bucks a month - so, since I can afford it, Iām happy to support my favorite creators. While I appreciate small perks like outtakes or expanded versions of the YouTube videos or extra social media content (like what would be on Instagram), I often donāt even engage with that content. I donāt currently watch anything on Patreon. Just my two cents.

I think that making a second sweater is the best idea. I realize it's going to be a knit a long for people in Patreon, but will you be showing your progress on here for everyone to see? I would also like to know the yarn you will be using. It still amazes me that you made such a lovely sweater out of Fisherman's wool! That is awesome in so many ways. Not every one can afford hand dyed yarn, and I love that fact that when you use these yarns out of Joanne's and Michael's, we get to explore what truly can be done with these yarns. Thank you for diving into all the knitting things.

I am floored at the amount of negative comments. You have every right to charge for content. This is a no-brainerāyou donāt owe anyone your time for free. It is unethical to ask for free labor and/or guilt you into feeling like you should. You also have every right to decide what feels right for *you*, for your channel. I am new here, but the audacity of some ppl is truly shocking. Whomever decides to leave when you stand in your truth is someone you donāt need anyway. <3

I've been re-reading comments and I think many don't understand our (non- Patreons) issue with this video (or at least, MY issue). In my case, I DO know the importance of having many platform incomes (Patreon, youtube, IG, etc), and Taylor is obviolusly within her right to get paid for her hard work. THAT is not the issue. The problem is that she used this free platform to advertise something only those who can pay will be able to access, when this is a space for people who for many reasons can only support her by watching and commenting. It was SUCH a let down to watch an entire video (with ads included) to learn more about this amazing KAL advertised in the title and thumbnail, only to find out almost at the end that it will ONLY be available for paying Patreons, it looks like clickbait honestly, I never thought this beautuful community would start targetting an "elite" member- only audience. So dissappointed. Of course I will continue to support Taylor and watch her content because it is great, but I feel like this community is transitioning to something I never thought it would become

Nothing on YouTube is "Free". Everything is selling you something. I am surprised people don't understand this.
I totally understand the frustration of another content creator having multiple sites to try to navigate attempting to feel included and supportive.
Free places still exists. Both ravelry and Reddit have forums, and are free sites to share content.

Tayler, I so greatly admire how you are handling/reacting to those who feel ācheatedā or āexcludedā from the extra work you are doing on Patreon. (I can see your educator hat poking through in your responses!) I have greatly appreciated that the commercials during your podcast only appear at the beginning when I know you could pepper them through out to make extra money. Going the Patreon route helps you receive compensation for your precious time.
Everyone has different budgets and things they can afford. I, personally, donāt feel like you have been all about the money. You have said many, many times that you would not be writing a pattern for your sweater. I would hope everyone got the message loud and clear. You now choosing to share while asking for compensation to share your knowledge and expertise is totally respectable to me.
You are a multi-faceted individual with many things (besides knitting) that I am grateful for you sharing. I appreciate your growth as a person throughout your podcasting time and love that you are a kind and caring human being. š

I think that making a second Frankensweater is a great idea. I think having a KAL along with it is also a great community builder. I think, however, that it's too bad the process part will be limited to the paying supporters on Patreon. I hope you will show your Frankensweater 2.0 progress/work/thoughts on your weekly podcasts, but if that's not in the cards, then okay. I'm an old hand at modifying patterns (and basically not following directions!), but it's my way, and I learn a lot from doing that. Many successes, occasional flops. Enjoy your gift knitting: I know your boys' teachers will be delighted with their mitts!
