Philly Joe Jones is an icon of jazz drumming who is most famous for his time with Miles Davis and his unique style of soloing and swinging that has made him one of the most respected drummers of the 20th century. Tim Carman is the author of "Philly-ISM" which breaks down the style and essence of Philly Joe Jones at its most basic form, so you can learn to play like the master himself!

Tim is an author, educator, and performer with the great band GA-20. This is the second book in his "Isms" series, the first was about Roy Haynes, and he is doing a great service to the community by breaking down the style of these legendary players.

Check out everything Tim Carman has released via his website at timcarmandrums.com/

Really great information, thank you. Tim's 'Groove Systems' goes straight to the number 1 spot for me. It's the perfect evolution of Alan Dawson' s method and also New Breed.... but instantly practical and usable. Absolute genius and a gift to all drummers.

Dam Bart!.....you knocked it out of the park with THIS episode. I love drum books, but Hudson Music gives you very little about new releases. Thank U for exploring this info with the author. Also, didn't know that Tim is from my neck of the woods in Massachusetts. Love your show, keep it up buddy :)

This is cool. Talking about the greats amd their stories(most of which are finished) is great, but always just as great to get the scoop on current people in certain scenes who have actually feet on the ground in those areas. Drummin these days, with how much has changed along side technolgy,is going to be looked back on mich differently then we look back om the 60s70s80s etc ,so episodes like this will be a good rhing to leave behind. Keep it going bart, this podcast is great, and going with video was the best thing you ever did..i hope you get george and terry back on, and maybe eventually even do episodes where people are playing, maybe not lessons necesarily, but say for this episode, itd be cool to hear tim show the phillyism on his kit, and as the discussion morphs showing different examples n such. โœŒ๏ธ

I think Philly became a Premier guy when staying in Great Britain. (There he waited for a working visa which he never got. Separate story.)
