As Dunkirk was unfolding and the British were compacted against the sea Churchill gave an order to a unit in a defensible area they must make a stand. The comanding officer replied that they would need support and re-enforcement to which Churchill replied that there would be none coming...
The officer acknowledged the order and set about preparing the defenses for what was coming to slow and if he could halt the advance of the Germans.
I brought this up because to win such a war men like that officer have to be able to comply with an order that they know means near total destruction of his unit.
It also takes someone willing to give that order knowing what it meant for those men as well.
