Their family tree being cut down is a metaphor of them all committing suicide ended their 'family tree'

The one dude never called Bonnie, Trip left Lux on the football field. Maybe the boys didn’t love them as much as they thought they did, and their memory has expanded over the years and become something that was never actually the case.

This scene is one of the most haunting and bone-chilling in movie history. The voiceover does amplify the eerie tone of this scene.

The boys really thought they were helping the girls escape and that they knew who they were as people, when in reality after they killed themselves they realized that actually didn’t know these girls at all. They were just fascinated by them and the girls knew that. That’s exactly why they played those songs with the boys over the radio and Lux used her sex appeal when she told them she’ll be waiting in the car.

This comment section demonstrates the film's message perfectly: for some reason, the focus is on the suffering of the boys, how the girls affected them, instead of how every boy and every man, every woman and some girls were the ones who drove them to suicide. "The outrageousness of a human being thinking solely of herself". They killed themselves, but still, is not their fault. Nobody ever learnt how much pain they caused to the Lisbon girls. "Women: you don't need to understand them, you just need to love them".

I think it bares mentioning that what these boys were feeling was not really love but an incurable infatuation, which in some ways in worse than love. There's nothing worse than being infatuated with someone you'll never see again. The only cure is the maturity that comes with age.

It always surprises me that people treat the girls suicides like it’s a mystery! Think about it, not only did they lose their sister but their home had stopped being their home. That feeling of losing your "safe space" is a terrible feeling!πŸ’”

at first i didn't get the metaphor of the dying trees but at the end you can see that all the elm trees were cut down because of the elm tree of the Lisbon family. just like that the suicide spread within the sisters

"Still do not hear us calling them out of those rooms where they went to be alone for all time. Alone in suicide, which is deeper than death, and where we'll never find the pieces to put them back together." From the book. I'll never understand why they kept the line "alone in suicide, which is deeper than death" out. It's so powerful!

That phsychotic insane mother of theirs is the reason they died, all they wanted was to be and feel free, the neighbors even said how the girls were always cooped up in the house too much, and just because lux decided to sleep out that one night, the mother took all the girls out of school and treated them like prisoners so the only way they felt they could be free is by death, poor lux,.... LET THIS MOVIE BE A LESSON TO ANY PARENTS THAT ARE LIKE THIS, FATHERS GROW SOME BALLS AND BE A MAN!! MOTHERS DONT BE LIKE HER. Its understandable that we love our children but never in our life must we ever drive them to that extend of death to feel free, TRUST AND LOVE, is what they need when we let them go out and explore this world, even when they make the wrong choices, TRUST they will learn grow up and move on to more mature choices.

That empty house, the haunting music, and cold blue lighting. Very effective. Such a great movie.

I member the first time seeing this movie and I was so disturbed. I was young but as I got older I realized why they did it. . it was their only way to truly escape. ..

the book, the movie, they were both so beautifully portrayed, even in the perspective of foolish boys driven by curiosity and hormones, such a well written piece of art that will never be forgotten once you finish it, the virgin suicides will truly stick with me forever

Anyone else remember how Mr. Lisbon never got a voiceover, even by the end? Small detail that's stuck with me, since the final shot of the Lisbons has that wordless pause where he could have said something. Mrs. Lisbon got a voiceover, and hell, even the lady who made suicide awareness flyers did, but the father or the Lisbon sisters never even got a word? That makes me think, either he let Mrs. Lisbon speak and once again remained silent, like he did 25 years prior, or he died.

Understandably, the production cut one of the most heavy among the closing lines that are both in the book and in the original script: And they hadn't heard us calling. Still do not hear us, calling them out of those rooms where they went to be alone for all time. Alone and suicide; which is deeper than death. And where we would never find the pieces to put them back together. The line can be heard at the end of the Suicide Underground theme from the film soundtrack.
