Discussing how different eras in music can be seen through the zodiac sign Saturn is transiting, and how those eras can be studied by looking at the Saturn returns of musicians, with astrologers Camille Michelle Gray, Lindsey Turner, and Chris Brennan.

Saturn spends about three years in each sign of the zodiac, and during the course of the episode we go through all twelve signs of the zodiac and discuss how the sign Saturn was in often characterized the music of that era.

Lindsey has made a special study of how the archetypes associated with each sign manifest very specific ways in the themes expressed in different musical eras, while Camille shows how the Saturn return of musicians often coincides with a very distinctive era in their individual discography.

Not even half way through but as a musician and an astrologer, I really appreciate this kind of relatable, close to home content

Other Saturn Return patterns not mentioned: Pink Floyd's album, Dark Side of the Moon is released the year Saturn goes into Cancer. It is recorded when Saturn is in Gemini, so there is a philosophical/mercurial angle to the music as well. Their other great album, Wish You Were Here was also released during Saturn in Cancer. All of the Pink Floyd band members had Saturn in Gem or Cancer so this was their Saturn return album (magnus opus)! Radiohead's OK Computer is released during Saturn in Aries, also during Thom Yorke's Saturn Return. One of the band's best works. To Pimp a Butterfly , one of hip hop's best albums, was released when Kendrick Lamar has his Saturn Return in Sagittarius. Between 1964-1967 during Saturn in Pisces(some Aries) these critically acclaimed albums were released: Pet Sounds by The Beach Boys, Revolver, Rubber Soul, Sgt Peppers by The Beatles, Highway 61 Bob Dylan, The Jimi Hendrix Experience were released. It is sooo true that there are a lot of DJs that are Capricorns, to name a few in the current electronic scene: Deadmau5, Skrillex, Calvin Harris, one of The Chainsmokers, Illenium,Tiesto, Armin van Buuren, Hardwell...

Don't know who will see this, but in regards to Queen- Freddie Mercury's stage name comes from Mercury ruling his Virgo sun. He designed their crest, with the faerie for him, the crab for Brian May as a cancer, and the two lions for John Deacon and Roger Taylor being Leos. Also given that they are all summer babies there is a good amount of overlap between all of their inner planets

This was really good. I would be interested in a version with the Saturn-return years before the 60’s, like jazz, flappers, big-bands, crooners, Tin Pan Ally, Broadway, the popular music before the 60’s

I love this format and the guests so much. It makes me want similar episodes with movies, fashion, or even just the evolution of overall popular aesthetics.

This podcast conversation is so good! Chris, so far you've done astrology of comedy, now Saturn Returns and music, and I'd die for an astrology of movies episode! I see Neptune being a big generational influence there. Thanks for making these episodes!

My Chemical Romance's album The Black Parade was released during the Saturn in Leo era (2006-2009) towards the end of 2006 and it charted pretty high! I felt like it was worth mentioning given the juxtaposition the entire vibe of the album has to the significations of the Sun Their vocalist Gerard Way was going through his Saturn return that same year!! He was heavily influenced by David Bowie and Freddy Mercury!!!

This can be the beginning of a new sub series: Movies, Actors and one on Comedians . The gift of this is that it was light even though it was “Saturn” in these times of stress, conflict and concern so THANK YOU for making my evening so much fun and making such a informative musical journey for the astrologically curious… could turn the cynics into believers. Can’t wait for the playlists!!!

Update now that I finished the episode (I split it up into chunks to watch). The top songs and themes pertaining to Saturn and the signs of transits were very cool. I wished I could have heard Chris give some input a little bit more but thankfully he came in strong at the end! The ball was kind of dropped for Saturn in Pisces (why not use the preceding Saturn in Pisces era to pull songs from?) but thankfully Chris had a list to pull from. As he said, there are so many musicians with Saturn in Pisces! I think the moody grunge that started in during the early 90s with Aquarius paved easy for Pisces to make moody, rebellious, garage band type of rock more prominent! We can see that moodiness returning to music nowadays.

My favorite Gemini Saturn song is Pink Floyd’s Echoes from the album Meddle It goes like this Overhead the albatross Hangs motionless upon the air And deep beneath the rolling waves In labyrinths of coral caves The echo of a distant time Comes willowing across the sand And everything is green and submarine And no one showed us to the land And no one knows the where's or why's But something stirs and something tries And starts to climb toward the light Strangers passing in the street By chance, two separate glances meet And I am you and what I see is me And do I take you by the hand And lead you through the land And help me understand the best I can? And no one calls us to move on And no one forces down our eyes No one speaks and no one tries No one flies around the sun Cloudless everyday You fall upon my waking eyes Inviting and inciting me to rise And through the window in the wall Come streaming in on sunlight wings A million bright ambassadors of morning And no one sings me lullabies And no one makes me close my eyes So I throw the windows wide And call to you across the sky
