Listen and practice the Light L consonant sound and the /ɑ/ as in OLIVE vowel sound in the refrain, "A-la-la-la."
To make the /ɑ/ as in OLIVE vowel sound, drop your jaw as if you were yawning. The lips are NOT rounded. The tongue is relaxed on the floor of the mouth. To make the Light L consonant sound, the tip of the tongue presses against the aveolar gum ridge located above and behind the top front teeth. The vocal cords are activated.
The American /l/ sound is created when the tip of the tongue touches the (bony) aveolar ridge above and behind the front teeth (the same spot for the /t/, /d/, and /n/ sounds). It is a continuous voiced sound - meaning the vocal cords are activated as the tongue tip presses and holds against the gum ridge. When the tongue placement is too high, touching the roof of the mouth an /r/ sound may be produced.
If you have trouble hearing the difference between the /l/ and /r/ sounds, listen to songs on both the L and R playlists. Listen attentively to the words LOVE and ROCK in the song "Loves Me Like a Rock." Here's a link:
