The thing that I find even more amazing than the speed of the head movement, is that while moving at that speed, the head is seeking to tracks which are just 10's of nanometres wide. In just thousandths of a second, the head moves to a position that is accurate to 1,000+ times smaller than the thickness of a human hair!!!!!!! Old school spinning hard drives might be old tech now, but they are truely incredible in what they must achieve in order to store and retrieve out data.

It's "technically" waterproof with the platters (not the other wiring parts), but the second you open the casing, you're inviting a ton of dust and air particulates that can easily scratch those platters. That's why there's usually a filter in the hard drive to help keep any remaining particles out (after manufacturing).

crazy to think 1 gig was worth $300,000 in 1981 and today we destroy 500 gigs to watch it happen again in slow mo lol
