The "Teacher" vs. Jesus • Wisdom Ep. 4

Hanging out with Ecclesiastes isn’t fun. The book goes on about the endless march of time that results in death for everyone. Everything dies––humans and animals. We can see that all living creatures go to the dirt, and we don’t have any concrete proof of what happens after that. Depressing, right? Yes––it can be. The teacher is trying to shake things up and dismantle the illusions of the reader, but it can be rough to read. The guys will talk about the context of Ecclesiastes, and why we as Jesus followers can see things differently.

Man. Them talking about how Tim's wife feels about suffering hit me because I've often felt like I was being tortured when I couldn't help where I wanted to. It's all about balance and I love that.

I so enjoyed this conversation. It is illuminating to me, 68 years old man, and brings great perspective. Thanks again for doing this!

The wisdom of Ecclesiastes seems to be best summed up as, "Everything fades. There are no other guarantees." The Lord Himself seemed to accept that as the truth of this world when He asked, "can any of you by worrying add a single hour to your span of life?" and commanded, "Do not worry about tomorrow, for tomorrow will bring worries of its own. Today’s trouble is enough for today." Attempting to secure happiness in this life guarantees greater misery -- even if God lets you have everything you think you want! Finding satisfaction in accomplishing the eternal will of God in the present, in contrast, minimizes the experience of misery and futility in even an objectively painful life.

When I was a teenager and discovered life's transience, I was so relieved to discover Ecclesiastes, because there was somebody else who understood that life is hevel.

This is exactly what I needed. It helps me so much to understand exactly what I'm feeling and takes a huge burden off my chest. Prayer wasn't doing it alone but I guess the Lord guided me to this. Thanks for doing his work

I’m with Jessica. Driving around southeast Portland by riverside I saw lots of young people on drugs and messed up like they had no caring parents. I don’t know what to do. Then I realized only the rich can make a big difference and that whole thing about the wealthy. Jesus was saying the poor will always be with you. Might mean something else.

Thank you both for breaking scripture down for us. I needed to hear that I should cause myself to become upset that I can not help all those who ask, whether it be a person or organization. I get so many organizations asking for money. I see homeless people that I do help but can not help every one I see.

My 27 year old husband just killed himself 8 months ago and I struggle not to let it overtake me. This video has given me momentary peace. I send these videos to people as well. Absolutely lightening to one's soul. I hope to become one with God.

The biggest take I get from Ecclesiastes is that it's not about you. Meaning the entire book is framed as what's in it for me? And it's constantly countered with everything is meaningless because I do good and don't get paid but evil man do evil and he does get paid ect. Like you clock in and god owes you money or something. God is good whether you exist or not. Whether you serve him or not. Ect. He doesn't owe anyone anything. I like how this book establishes that and walks the reader through the faulty scope until it comes to the conclusion.
