I think she's describing a purely online romantic relationship whether this is a fling or long term we don't know. They've never met but she clearly has no interest in ever meeting him as that would break the fantasy and her heart. This is a simple case of keeping someone at arms length (virtual length) and not wanting to get too involved and risk a heart break. Because when you're online you can create a whole new persona and be whoever you want, meeting this mystery someone might break that fantasy and reveal they're not all they say they are.
