ā€¼ļøIf you want to play with accuracy and confidence at the piano...

āœ…You MUST know how to practice CORRECTLY.

ā€” The topic of self-love (compassion) comes up often when Iā€™m teaching

[and letā€™s be real, in my life also].

And when I tell people that itā€™s important to have self compassion throughout their piano journeyā€¦

Almost 100% of piano players say they DONā€™TĀ struggle with the issue.

If the opposite of self compassion is cold heartedness or self hate, that sounds pretty intense.

And no one wants to admit that they treat themselves badlyā€¦.

BUT

I observe quietly as the SAME PEOPLE that donā€™t identify as having issues with self compassionā€¦

Play wrong notes and say out loud ā€œCome ON - WHY CANā€™T YOU DO THIS???ā€

Or

Finish playing through a piece and canā€™t say one single positive thing about their performance.

And I recognize this so easily because Iā€™ve been there.

Iā€™ve always felt a deep connection to music.

But for a long time, practicing and playing for others became a big ā€˜hate on myselfā€™ party.

It didnā€™t feel like anything I did was ever as good as I wanted it to be.

And I got stuck trying to make everything PERFECT instead of remembering that all music is beautiful.

Every mistake I made would spur frustration, impatience and negative self talk.

And I had to work to be able to identify these thoughts and recognize when I was having themā€¦

And then interrupt them by choosing to tell myself things that werenā€™t hurtful and didnā€™t make the learning process awful.

How do you talk to yourself during piano practice?

What you say, think, and believe MATTERS.

And in fact, it will totally impact the way you practice and play.

So in todayā€™s tutorial, sit back as I take you through the 3 most common beliefs that totally kill progress at the pianoā€¦.

AND I give you tips and strategies to ensure that you donā€™t fall victim to these self sabotaging beliefs!

Cheers,

ā¤ļø Ashlee

I am 72. I began my piano learning four months ago and I am so glad I have been making progress daily! Thank you so much for boosting my confidence in myself!

I agree. I start to play piano as an adult and said so terrible things sometimes to myself. ItĀ“s very important what you say. We have to be careful to not kill that first flame that lead us to actually start to learn the piano . Thank you so so much to help us to create the right way to think.

Great video! Learning piano can be tough on self esteem, because it sometimes seems that thereā€™s no progress in sight. This is a good time to remember the law of inevitabilityā€”which is simply the understanding that if you love something and you want to be able to do it well you have to have faith that your effort while learning will be rewarded by forward progress. Just because progress doesnā€™t seem to be occurring right away doesnā€™t mean that it isnā€™t happening. I make my living playing piano, and as an older guy I have to remind myself everyday that putting the effort out continually trying to improve is the key to everything, otherwise it is garbage in, and garbage outšŸ˜ŠšŸ˜Š

Really amazing the way you developed and teach this philosophy of practice! I am a MD in Vienna , Austria , THE city of music, playing piano for many years with limited practice time, that sometimes lead to frustration, but Your teaching of the right way to practice is EXTREMELY helpful, I thank you very much for all Your efforts with all the videos!! This is great advice! Id like to add, dont think all practice is the same. I played piano at various points of my life, but i always just played whatever. I started again a few months ago and i have been been taking the time to practice scales, learning to read notation, and whatever exercises to improve my technique. A little intention goes a long way.

Wonderful video. I have to sing in order to get a melody in my head, and this is going to help me overcome my doubts. Merci beaucoup.

1) Practice makes progress not perfect. Even the best musicians don't think they're perfect. 2) Hold consistency and accuracy as most important, not speed. Only then does speed come 3) Stop telling yourself you can't do something. Make a list of affirmations you can constantly look at.
