It was back in mid 2003 through to about Summer 2004 and I worked at a restaurant about 30 miles from my house. I had to drive each morning across one long stretch of road at 5am and I'd leave work at about Midnight so the rides were always desolate.
It was a strange time in my life for a few reasons but this album is one of 4 I listened to almost exclusively in this period.
It would be a cold Michigan morning and I'd be driving through the middle of nowhere in a beat-up 1984 pickup my Grandpa gave me. It was so beat, man haha. An absolute heap but it got me from A to B. It only had a tape deck and the muffler was hanging on by wiring. Engine was loud and trash but it ran.
Anyway, I'd record music onto a cassette to listen to on the drive and that act of dubbing tapes like I was back in 1995 was so annoying that I only made a few tapes. Plus, the few tapes I made were good so I just stuck with them exclusively. Those tapes were:
This album, The Strokes "Room On Fire", Nick Drake's "Pink Moon" and Outkast's "Love Below/Speakerboxx" were all I listened to in between 18 hour days in some shhthole Italian restaurant in SE Michigan, an obvious hotbed of of Italian cuisine (haha).
Any song from one of those albums instantly returns me to cold mornings, sun rising as I'm in a busted truck with no heat. Dead corn fields all around me, just dirt fields for the moment. Frost covering everything in sight, including my absolutely broken heart haha.
One of the things making the time so weird was the mini-nervous breakdown I was having at the ripe age of 20yo about love lost, mistakes, regrets and my future (lol).
But I also had a lot of good times with coworkers and such as we were all 18-24yo and as lost as we usually are at those ages.
Sorry for the length. The nostalgia just hit me hard at the moment this auto-played for me.
