Meaning the subjects and opinions found on his new ‘These Things Happen Too’ aren’t the same as those on his 2014 debut, ‘These Things Happen.’ But it’s a wise man who can chart his growth, and as the Bay Area hero’s new tracks take time to examine the strengths and weaknesses of his 32-year-old self, he connects a lot of dots and share a lot of insights. That “Breakdown” collab with Demi Lovato is a perfect symbol of his new candor: he’s going there this time, sharing his doubts, confessing regrets, standing up to the stuff that drives him crazy. And Gerald’s level of eloquence has grown, too. Listen to him spit through the album’s title cut in our Brooklyn studio. The images race by, the subjects get meatier and meatier with each new verse.
