I was in a JUNIOR ballet company. One of the girls who was a senior in high school started bleeding through her pointe shoe on stage and kept dancing. The only reason nobody noticed is because they were already painted red. She did so many turns and finished the entire routine. When our director told us about it she then finished by saying “You need to have this much dedication! This is what you should strive for!” I quit two years later.

There’s also the color palette here. Nina — literally “little girl” — starts dressed mostly in pale pink/white. Her clothes then turn into gray, then ultimately black.

this is one of my all time favorite movies. ngl a minor thing i loved about it was how the movie subtly encourages us to lean into the tendency for women to view each other as a threat, so all through the movie we think of Lily as Nina's rival and enemy. it's only at the end, looking back, that we realize she was genuinely her friend and probably the only person in the whole movie who had her back. sad 😢

Fun fact: Nina's partner (the one who he asked if he would fuck her) is Natalie Portman's real life husband. They met for this movie as he was assigned to teach her ballet. They're still married today and have 2 kids.

The eating disorder besides from the obvious need to be thin, could also be her trying to maintain some control over her life. Many people who have eating disorders say it’s about control. Many people with them have overbearing or abusive families

I love the scene when Nina and Lily are at her apartment and Nina's mom is confronting her. They show Nina in the mirror and Lily sort of steps away from her in the reflection, suggesting that they are both Nina. Such a brilliant bit of storytelling you could completely miss.

I used to be a competitive dancer - though no where near at that level. I pushed myself far too much and developed injuries that permanently disabled me. This movie resonates with me so much - the relationships that are founded on competition, the toxic nature of the industry and community, the unhealthy and deadly search for perfection. Natalie Portman knocked it out of the part and was so mesmerizing in the role.

Natalie Portman's fragile yet ambitious performance was amazing in this movie. I liked that we got to see her home life, too.

This was a side of Mila Kunis that I was so excited to experience! She is an extremely underated dramatic actress

This movie shows so much about beauty standards, sexual harassment, and ageism in the entertainment industry. I was shocked watching this ending explained.

Honestly Mila’s character asking ‘was I good’ is a mood.

Man, I was always so sad at how many people slept on this movie as a good horror film. Everyone just saw "ballet" and wrote it off. I LOVE this movie, and couldn't wait to buy it when it came out on DVD. I could easily watch this again any day of the week, and how there are so many powerhouse actresses in it: Natalie, Barbra, Winona, Mila, and even Ksenia. Love them all so much.

This movie as a teenager made me realize how deep movies can be and i absolutely fell in love with psychological and deep movies after that. I didnt even know half of what was going on in this movie either but its timeless

Would love to see an Ending Explained for Perfect Blue! Such a great movie.

I think that The names are foreshadowing too. Lily is probably short for Lilith who's kindov a darker counter to Eve.

Nina was implied to have died. It's actually left ambiguous as to wether she died or not.

For some reason i love the small detail in the floors when she was practicing and hurt herself it shows how much she practiced in that spot

Love how you did an older movie that’s been out for some time now. Black Swan is probably my most favorite movie of Natalie Portman’s and made me see her as a recognized actress. The reality of her psychological break is often times true for people who’ve been put under intense pressure by their parents, themselves, & peers for years. The desperation for being “perfect” can be all too relatable.

She deserved an Oscar, learning that much ballet couldn’t have been easy
