Part of the reason average speeds in CT are slower is the curviness of the mainline. I think the overall average is 60-ish. Just remember, when the railroad was constructed beginning 1836, they wanted avoid the many hills and hit the port cities. Just look at the huge loops around New Haven and New London. I would guess the section covered here is one of the faster sections.
