How dangerous id Tennessee? We always have a lot to say about Tennessee. The home of 7 million or so Americans has many sides. We can choose to close our eyes to other things and emphasize only the positive sides. In that case, we can talk about the Great Smokies, Graceland, the blues, the restaurants, and all other seeming attractions of this state. But that will be of no help to anyone, including Tennesseans and those planning on visiting the Volunteer State. As much as we love to talk about those things, we don’t want to shy away from the question, How dangerous is Tennessee? However, rather than answering that question for you, we will only help you to arrive at the right answer.
Is Tennessee Really Dangerous?
Do we need to go that route again? Are we not concerned about how dangerous Tennessee is? Well, if we are going to make anything meaningful out of that, we need to consider what the facts and figures are telling us: An overview of crime figures available to us from different sources points to the fact that Tennessee is really dangerous. Let us look at data from the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) for two consecutive years 2019 and 2020 and see how it provides an affirmative answer to the two questions.
In 2019, there were 221,800 crimes reported in Tennessee. Adjusted for the state’s population, the crime rate in Tennessee is 3,248 crimes per 100,000. That is way too high, beyond the national average. However, it went down a bit in 2020 though the total number of individual crimes committed tells us otherwise. In 2020, a total of 218,003 crimes were committed in the state, giving a rate of 3,165.5 per 100,000. Please compare that to the national crime rate of 2,346 crimes per 100,000 and kindly form your opinion. Analyzing this FBI’s crime data, you’ll see that Tennessee is the 5th most dangerous state in the United States.
Tennessee’s Crime Rate in Nationwide Context
Let’s go back to the 2019 figure to prove a point. Based on that figure, crime is more common in the state. While the national crime rate for that year was 2,489 per 100,000, it was 3,428 per 100,000 in the state, as mentioned earlier. Do the math and you’ll find that the rate in Tennessee is 23 percent higher. In fact, of the 50 states, only 6 have crime rates higher than Tennessee. Maine was the state with the lowest crime rate of 1,361 per 100,000 while New Mexico had the highest rate which was 3,945 per 100,000 residents of the state.
An Analysis of Each Crime
We have so much to tell you in our analysis of each crime in the state. However, let’s limit it to only the FBI’s crime rate which includes types of crimes. Out of these, three are related to property while the rest can be categorized under violent crimes.
Property Crimes
For one thing, most of the crimes committed in the state in 2019 were property crimes which accounted for 82 percent of all crimes committed there and 85 percent of all that were committed in the country during the period. In totality, 181,152 property crimes were reported within the boundary of the state in 2019. That would give a rate of 2,653 per 100,000 Tennesseans. This rate is higher than the national property crime rate of 2,110 per 100,000 during the year. It’s the 11th state with the highest property crime rate in the country. Now, let’s look at the 3 different types of crime under this category.
Let’s start with larceny which is the term for the unlawful removal of another person’s property. It’s the most common type of property crime in the state. It occurred in 2019 more than 5,086,096 times nationwide, accounting for 73 percent of all property crimes. That year, Tennessee witnessed larcenies at the rate of 1,934 incidents per 100,000. This is higher than the U.S. rate of 1,550 per 100,000. Tennessee’s larceny rate is the 8th highest among states.
